Name your absolute favorite black metal album of all time. ONLY ONE! No lists please. It's easy to make a list of five or ten - it's much more challenging and interesting to name only one single album.

I chose mine since after twenty years I'm still playing it on a regular basis. Something about the sound, atmosphere, the drumming, the riffing. Over the last couple of years I realized it must be my favorite black metal album ever.

Definitely a close contender for me as well.

Honestly though... Carelian Satanist Madness is tied with it at this point in my life. Not a single flaw in that album, has perfect songs from start to finish. Not a single thing about it I don't like. Darkthrone of course I heard first, and of course that album is also flawless and every way... but there are things about the Darkthrone album that are not as good in my opinion as the Satanic Warmaster album.

For instance, and this is entirely a matter of opinion, I much prefer the guitar sound on Carelian Satanist Madness to that of Under a Funeral Moon. In fact I think it's the best guitar sound I've heard in my life for a black metal album in that style. I wonder what guitar amp Werwolf used to record that album... probably some tiny thing. But the sound is so good so I always wonder, even what guitar he used as well for as I said that guitar sound is mystifyingly excellent in every way.

But of course Under a Funeral Moon came out first and is objectively much more influential and "important" album when it comes to black metal... so this makes the choice even harder. Could it be objectively better... I don't think so. It's still a matter of personal taste no matter what the date of release is or how many people like it.

So I think the answer must be Carelian Satanist Madness.

Cool

Definitely my favorite, with Blaze in the Northern Sky as a close second.

Without hesitation. Nasty vocals, strange effects, and an overall unsettling atmosphere.

Bathory- The Return

After all those years, and so many great bands and good music, I still think this is the best black metal album.

"A Blaze In The Northern Sky" is what comes to mind first.

I'd have to go with DMDS. A truly one of a kind album, unlikely to be ever matched in terms of its artistic value.
