Another big name I've yet to listen to after all these years. I've been told the early work is the best.

Got paid this week, which albums are worth buying?

Everything up to Channeling The Quintessence of Satan is worth buying, but if you had to choose one Nachthymnen is their best release by far.

This.

Essentially everything (don't neglect Supreme Immortal Art), you aren't missing much with Satanized but everything else is flawless.

I agree with the others who said that everything from Verwustung to Channeling the Quintessence of Satan is worth buying. Older, mid-era Abigor slays. They are another band I grew up listening to, and still return to on a semi-regular basis. If you can only buy one album, maybe grab Nachthymnen. If it is to your liking, head back to the beginning and work your way forward when you have the chance.

If you want originals your wallet will get raped, the old stuff goes for silly money [some sillier than others] Confused
I've got a copy of Apokalypse on the way to me right now

This.

Nachthymnen is also a good place to start because it's more accessible than an album like Supreme immortal art for instance.

Chronologically, from the first to the last. All are good (Satanized included) and all are very different. My personal favorite is (maybe) Channeling the Quintessence of Satan/Quintessence, but it depends on my current mood.

Depends on the point you got into.
First Nachthymnen --> Opus IV big disappointment.

Apokalypse is totally under-rated in my opinion. It's a bit more raw and straight the the point than the other releases of the period, but none the less excellent!

I think Opus IV was a breaking point between their early, more melodic sound and the weirder approach that was about to come some years later. To me, it's their peak. It can be merciless and brutal in one moment, then they come up with a bizarre riff like the one opening Eerie Constellation and suddenly another twist brings a fairy-taleish break with flutes and winds blowing. Brilliant album which I never grow tired of.

I was obsessed with this band for years. Opus IV is my favourite (guy above me summed it up nicely), but Nachthymnen is probably the best place to start. Its pretty accessible, not in a lame way or anything. Apokalypse is also top quality.
