Good ones:

Thou Shalt Suffer
Mortem (pre Arcturus)
Marduk up to the first album
Dissection demo and 7"
Old Funeral
Incantation (pre Profanatica)
Not so good ones:

In my opinion Darkthrone's first album is a masterpiece of technical dark death metal, and I've no problem that later they turned into black metal! |

I have only examples of two not so good ones:
Curse (Fin) and Sigillum Diaboli (Fin). Both had very strong deathmetal influences on their first demos, which made them stand out from the mass. Later on they became typical norse-sounding black metal bands. (havenīt heard newer Diaboli albums though)
Edit. Cradle of Filth`s demos were also pretty much death metal efforts and beat the crap out of the black metal albums of theirs... |

Temple of Offal was pretty much straight death metal. _________________ Your opinion is as insignificant as your existence.

| That pre-Arcturus Mortem material is pretty dire in my opinion. |

Slow Death 7"/demo is one of the best things to come out of Norway. I love the vocals. _________________ Your opinion is as insignificant as your existence.

Heh, wanted to write more or less the same... back then I was incredibly disappointed that they changed their style after that masterpiece. |

| Necromass (ita) was basically a death metal band at the time of the 'Connected body pentagram' tape. |

Yeah they went Black -> Death -> Black
I didn't like the death metal stuff too much. _________________ Your opinion is as insignificant as your existence.

+1. Vocals especially sucked hard and the music lacked brilliant riffs. A band that walked the black-to-death path with more convincing results must be polish Behemoth, for some reason I find their latest Morbid Angel worship more enjoyable than the Gorgoroth rip-off they delivered on the early albums. |
