for some alternative UK-Death/Doom unholy trinity:

Nightmare Visions / Chorus Of Ruin / Decomposed

honourable mention goes out to: Cathedral's debut

Most people here hate goth, but CHORUS OF RUIN is 40% gothrock inspired!!

Does anyone know of any underground shit I might not be aware of that is along the lines of the old material from these bands? Old My Dying Bride is the closest thing I've found. Looking for bands that have more emphasis on the doom sound.

You're fucking kiddin here, right? The latest???? What about BRAVE MURDER DAY?? Is that gay too? Com'on!!!

I was never a huge Katatonia fan. So yeah, For Funerals... is the latest thing I have of theirs. I haven't heard but one song from Brave Murder Day that was on a sampler (think it was off there anyway). It didn't have the same vibe as their older material.

That's another great band that deserves to be mentioned in this thread.

Well, there may be some similarites but in my opinion it is a far cry from goff shit.

The earlier material with their original singer (Kari Rueslatten) was really mellow and maybe somewhat gothic (actually rather folk-inspired I would say) but you shouldnīt think of them as of any other female fronted "metal" band that is popular today... actually its quite introvert stuff I think.

The band got a jazz singer after and also started to incorporate more experimental parts and structures.

They went on with session vocalists thereafter, I am not familar with that period.

Canīt say I listen to their stuff that much anymore but the "first" phase was actually quite good (at least they had a feature in Slayer Nr 10) and when your mind is on for some more adventurous stuff the "second" phase is very recommendable as well!
Sa them live with the second line-up in 1995 (I think, may be 1996, I forgot) and it was great!

More of the early 90s doom/death along the lines of early My Dying Bride/Anathema/Paradise Lost:

Celestial Season - Forever Scarlet Passion (1993)
Enchantment (UK) - Dance The Marble Naked (1994)

I think the first Beyond Dawn album, "Pity Love" , is essential for fans of this style....they went extremely weird later on, but that first album is pretty unique in my opinion.

I have this CD. Although it does have a very similar style of playing to the Big 3, what it lacked, IMHO is songs. The growls and downtuned guitars plus pummeling drums are present but the songs kinda blend into another which makes one tend to lose attention.

More great doom bands: UNHOLY, THERGOTHON, SHAPE OF DESPAIR, DOLORIAN, DECORYAH, MOURNING BELOVETH, TENEBRE, VOID OF SILENCE.
I think "Solar lovers" by CELESTIAL SEASON is better than "Forever Scarlet Passion".
"Dismal gleams of desolation" from GOD FORSAKEN is a really good album. Another great album(similar to B.M.D.-Katatonia) is BLAZING ETERNITY - "Times and unknown waters".
I doubt that there's anything that can compete with the utter darkness and sorrow of "Turn loose the swans" or "Brave Murder Day", but the above mentioned bands/albums deserve to hold a place in your collection
