How long before it goes bankrupt? I don't do a ton of mailing, but it seems the USPS is way cheaper for small packages than any other shipper I have looked into. What are people's opinions on other companies like UPS, Fed Ex and so on?

also, discuss garbage island.

UPS is cheaper after USPS, but beats the fuck out of their packages. Fed Ex is always the most reliable, but a bit more expensive. DHL is pretty reliable as well, but I can't even remember the last time I used them.

Maybe their projected policy of 5-days-a-week is valid? I don't know... that's one hell of a loss.

From my experience fedex and UPS are far more reliable than USPS. There are some considerable drawbacks though, such as they won't deliver to PO boxes (obviously) and their fares for international shipping are fucking ridiculous.

My thoughts are the government won't allow USPS to go out of business. USPS will simply retool their services. They've done it before (like when they eliminated slow boat), and will probably do it again by possibly eliminating media mail, parcel post and first class shipping both domestically and abroad.

1st class is airmail pretty much. It's the only method to use internationally.
Priority and 1st class, nationally are pretty much the same delivery time, just paying extra for nothing I think... Parcel post, and media mail needs to be made obsolete I think... If you're gonna screw w/ mailing stuff out, it might as well be a speedy method. Surprised

The death blow to USPS will be another hike in gas costs. I'm pretty sure Media Mail will be eliminated pretty soon.

Canada Post were in a hell of a lot of red ink a few years back. They made some changes, improved services and as far as I know have been in the black for years. Some people complain about cost, but that comes with such a low population density - lots of territory to cover with a small population. So I don't see why the USPS couldn't clean up its act too.

We've had 5-day mail delivery for as long as I can remember and no one has died because of that. The only times I've seen weekend deliveries were during December, which I guess is due to increased load. I remember getting a few NWN! Prod packages delivered on Sunday. Cool

And then all those who claim it's useless and "a thing of the past" will realize how useful and cheap it was.

The loss of all postal systems is imminent.
The legislation of steep downloading fee's based on bandwidth used will begin.

Did you guys know there are several large mountains of garbage floating in the ocean, one is the actual size more or less of the United States.
What has this to do with anything you ask ?
Everything I say. Everything with where the future is taking us and how that future will look and what will be affordable or make sense to manufacture anymore... nevermind ship globally.

Postage is a bitch. Confused

On a wholly unrelated question, can you show me photographic evidence that this "floating garbage" exists? Really? I have heard this ridiculous claim before and have seen no evidence to the contrary. And don't pm me a news story. If it is the size of Texas, I WANT A CREDIBLE PHOTO. And there will always be DIY manufacturing operations to keep certain formats alive. No matter what the political or social climate is.

I work for the city of Edmonton garbage dept. They were playing this documentry in the lunch room and showing video footage of all these places globally like how in China some people, like a cities worth, live in the garbage as they have no infrastructure to move it etc etc, and then there was a blurb on these ocean deposits floating beneath the surface, which they apparently track by satellite. Should not be hard to google and obtain such information.

Here is a link to a story ...

I mean, honestly, what kind of clarity in a picture are you expecting when the size of the item is (this story now 2x the size of Texas) http://boingboing.net/2007/10/22/floating-toxic-plast.html

There is only going to be small local snapshots of garbage, beleive it or not I suppose. All I know is personally I haul out 12 ton of garbage 5 days a week and I am one of 30 trucks doing it, then there are the contractors looking after the rest of the city, so another 200 trucks hauling the same out and that's just Edmonton.

The 12 ton a day is during winter (slow months)... Summer I was doing 18 - 24 ton a day.
So now thinking of all the worlds cities, and some of these cities run garbage pick-up 24/7 like New York etc etc, it is not hard to believe that we are piling this shit up everywhere and anywhere, and now it's in the ocean which shocks people ??? What the hell did they think we were doing with it globally ? Laughing Humans make a lot of waste.
Our society is fucked, just think of the manufacturing daily of everything and what goes out to garbage.
Sure they try to recycle some today, but it's still not entirely worth the $$$ all the time.

Garbage island is real, and there is more than one of them. Confused

Just think miles of this floating soup...

To my knowledge there is no credible photo of a "garbage island" though there is a ton of garbage out in the area the point to. The thing is it breaks down into smaller bits that get mixed up with the water so you just end up with a vast area of murky water filled with tiny cells of plastic.

This (non scientific) documentary is a pretty interesting look at the area.

The USPS fucked themselves deliberately just a few years ago. They stripped away and deleted important services they were offering and effectively doubled their price. The net effect is that millions of small customers businesses through them came to a screeching halt. I can say easily that in the the last few years, when i once did maybe $5000 worth of mailing through them every year(probably more), that is now down to lets say $500. that is a 10X decrease. Just simple multiply that $4500 by one million and that is 4.5B. So no wonder they are having problem..dumbshits.
