Do you know if they plan to do CDs? Would really like to grab a few of their earlier albums.

Maybe later if TPL will allow me to license them. The original TPL editions are hard to get these days.

OUT NOW!
Chaos Echoes “Mouvement” Digipak CD
ANTI-GOTH 376

(Description by J. Campbell)
With the 2015 release of their debut album, “Transient,” Chaos Echœs established themselves as not only one of the most unique bands on the NWN! roster, but one of the most truly innovative bands in the underground metal scene at large—a status reinforced with the release of their second album, “Mouvement.” Chaos Echœs continues the psychological and spiritual explorations pursued with their previous works, but whereas the focus of “Transient” was on the individual and the internal forces operating within, “Mouvement” explores the effect of the external on the self—the sharpening of the individual will against the coarse whetstone of world. The music traces a narrative arc, and, other than the break between the sides of the LP, the segments of the composition are seamlessly merged together to create a single piece of music. “Mouvement” begins with a frantic maelstrom of serpentine guitars coiled into a tight knot of anxiety and claustrophobia. The atmosphere is hostile and unsettling. As the first side of the LP progresses, the tension is brought to a boil and then dissipates, carried by an undertow of melancholy into a sea of anguish. Here, the band demonstrates its unique ability to orchestrate dissonance, to weave the frayed threads of entropy into a sprawling and bleak tapestry of emptiness. As the side closes, the mood becomes detached and introverted, a tangle of melodies set adrift in a cavernous bed of reverb draped across a lopsided frame of freeform percussion. The second side of the album opens with the band moving in unison around a snarling riff. It is a willful confrontation, a display of strength in the face of the corrosive forces all around. By the midway point of the side, however, the music becomes repetitious and hypnotic. The cacophony that characterized the earlier portion of the album evaporates into a hazy, ritualistic trance as the individual transcends the world around him. Voices cut through the miasmic field—chanting, conjuring, summoning—guiding the album into a more meditative space. As the side ends, these voices are all that remain. “Mouvement” was meticulously composed and painstakingly recorded, mixed, and edited over the span of two years. The band’s attention to detail is apparent and the impact of the album is stunning. As on “Transient,” the tracks on the new album are structured and stitched together into a larger form such that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And as with all Chaos Echœs releases, the accompanying visual artwork, created by Stefan Thanneur, is as magnificent and intrinsic to the impact of the release as the music itself.

Rites of Thy Degringolade "The Blade Philosophical" CD
ANTI-GOTH 362

(Description by J. Campbell)
Anyone familiar with the history of extreme metal in Canada must acknowledge the importance of Edmonton veterans Rites of Thy Degringolade. Originally conceived in 1997 as a solo project by Paulus Kressman, known at that time for his phenomenal drumming and vocals for Sacramentary Abolishment (who would evolve into Axis of Advance following Kressman’s departure), the earliest Rites recordings were solitary, experimental endeavors. The self-titled 1999 demo and the debut album, “The Carytid,” from 2000, feature Kressman handling all instrumentation. With the inclusion of guitarist J. Wroth in 2001, Rites became more powerful and precise. Over the next several years, the duo recorded and released the legendary “Totality” album, the follow up “Totality’s Kommand” EP, and the split with Portal, entitled “Our Dreadful Sphere.” Kressman and Wroth then recruited Malevolus (Godless North, Gloria Dioboli) for the recording of the third album, “An Ode to Sin,” which the band elected to release on NWN! just as the label was beginning to establish its own prominence in the underground. That lineup wouldn’t last, however, and by 2006, the band was dormant, with Kressman focusing on other projects for the next decade, including Warmarch, Weapon, and Gloria Diaboli among others. It was, therefore, an unexpected and welcome development when, in 2015, Kressman and Wroth reunited to resurrect Rites of Thy Degringolade, along with new members, guitarist N.K.L.H. (Antediluvian, Weapon, Amphisbaena) and bassist C.W. to perform at the Covenant Fest in Vancouver. The band persisted and with this lineup—the fullest in the band’s history—Rites set about recording their first album in 13 years. “The Blade Philosophical” is at once a recapitulation of the band’s earlier work and a continued expansion of the boundaries of extreme metal. It is, in the truest sense, a real album, with common sonic and thematic threads woven throughout, drawing the tracks together into something cohesive and whole. Conceptually, the album is an exposition of the themes that permeate the band’s entire body of work. While many details of the philosophy of Rites remain obscure, the overarching premise emerges: the exaltation of the self—the cultivation of the individual will—to disrupt, navigate, and ultimately control the ever-flowing streams of determinism. “The Blade Philosophical,” Kressman elaborates, “is the study and catharsis in the constant state of will—deterministic all, and the self as creator and destroyer.” The sound of Rites has always been distinctive—the band is one of a handful that can be honestly characterized as unique. On this album, the full spectrum of the band’s sound is on violent display. Kressman’s frenetic percussion and the low-end guitars form a tangled and tense knot at the core, that is draped and gilded with shimmering contrapuntal melodies delivered by Wroth and N.K.L.H. The organic fibers of Rites’ sound remain in omnipresent tension with the grinding mechanistic and boldly physical elements. The sprawling universe suspended in death-black paralysis. The misshapen spine of the cosmos dissected in the mind of man. “The Blade Philosophical” is a controlled descent into the orgiastic field of rape and disorder called the world and the corresponding ascendency of the individual from within. The release of “The Blade Philosophical” signifies more than just the band’s return to recording; Rites is currently preparing to embark on its first major-scale European tour (24 dates), and will be playing various fests in 2018 and beyond. NWN! is supremely honored to present this monumental return to form by one of the greatest bands of the last several decades.

Knelt Rote "Alterity" CD
ANTI-GOTH 364

(Description C. Conrad)
Over the course of its first three albums, Knelt Rote morphed from a band whose sound was originally most identifiable within the boundaries of grindcore to one that later wandered further down the spectrum of aural extremity into the realm of black/death metal. Its first album, “From Without” (2008), is an amalgam of breakneck tempos, frenzied guitar riffs, and rabidly barked vocals that reflects as much influence from the most extreme forms of hardcore punk as from the domain of metal. A palpable shift occurred on Knelt Rote’s second album, “Insignificance” (2010), and became more intensified with the 2012 release of “Trespass.” Although certain elements from the band’s first recording remained clearly intact, the songs began to assume a darker tone that was more menacing than angst-ridden, and the violence inherent in the music became better focused and significantly more pronounced. Throughout all of these works, and further complicating an easy classification of the band’s style, was the incorporation of harsh noise that both intensified the uneasiness inflicted upon the listener and threatened to shatter a given song into a thousand unrecognizable fragments at any unannounced moment. As it had done with the CD release of “Insignificance” and the LP and CD versions of “Trespass,” Nuclear War Now! Productions hereby presents “Alterity,” Knelt Rote’s fourth album and one that continues along the same trajectory established by the previous sequence of recordings. The devastation wrought by the incessant percussive barrage and grinding guitars on “Alterity” is matched by the dark introspection into the human condition that it endeavors to navigate. The lyrics explore such themes as social dissolution, identity, mental illness, obsession and suicide in the context of fatalism and inevitability, as opposed to personal agency. The music reflects the complete removal of will in situations typically associated with decision-making and understandable causation, leaving one to question how much control he has over his fate in an environment so maligned with threats to self-preservation. The vaguely ominous artwork that adorns the cover and accompanying booklet serves to magnify this doubt, casting a web that promises to entangle any who hope to escape their imperiled existence.

Drowning the Light LPs were sent from IBP already. I should have them in a week or so.

LoC DLPs are finishing up in the next few weeks. I'll give the board members a heads up before they're listed.

Just added them to the shop. The high price is because I bought them at retail price and paid for air mail shipping from Sweden. At least they all arrived in mint condition here.

OUT NOW!
Exorcist “Voices From the Graves” LP
ANTI-GOTH 383

(Description by C. Conrad)
Nuclear War Now! has once again ventured deep into the forgotten underground wasteland of late-1980s Eastern European metal history to unearth yet another artifact to add to its ever-expanding sub-collection of recordings that were never fully appreciated due to the region’s geopolitical isolation and other related circumstances. This most recent expedition has yielded “Voices from the Graves,” a compilation of Exorcist’s two demos from 1987 and 1988, which continued a Polish tradition of evil thrash first established by Kat and later continued by other similar bands such as Hellias. Formed in Warsaw in 1986, Exorcist originally consisted of an enigmatic quartet that went by the individual monikers of Butcher (vocals), Aggressor (guitars), Antichrist (bass), and Skeleton (drums). However, soon after the band’s inception and following its first recognized recording of a rehearsal that same year, Antichrist was replaced by Necrophiliac on bass. In its early days, and thanks to assistance from Marcin Wawrzyńczak from Eternal Torment zine, Exorcist was able to play several live shows alongside fellow countrymen in similarly obscure bands like Forst and the more renowned Vader. In 1987, the band recorded its first demo, “Voices from the Graves,” in Skeleton’s basement. While this demo is clearly influenced by the songwriting and technical proficiency of the German pioneers of thrash, specifically Kreator and Destruction, it also exudes an aura of darkness that is equally comparable to the early black metal of Sodom. Marked by a distinct rawness and aggression in the music itself, the presumably primitive conditions of the recording space and equipment also manifest themselves in a blown-out production which serves to enhance the destructive nature of the songs. This first demo was originally circulated under a slightly different title, “Voices out of the Graves,” in very limited numbers to a few different fanzines. In addition to the variation in its title and the name of the first track, this advance tape featured a slightly different version of the artwork that was later included on the more widely-spread “Voices from the Graves” tape. These variations notwithstanding, the audio on both versions was identical. As a result of the dissemination of this first demo, Exorcist attracted the attention of several underground zines, such as Slayer Mag, which in turn led to greater exposure. In 1988, the band recorded its second demo, “After the North Winds,” in Ochota studio after a lineup change that involved Butcher and Necrophiliac being replaced by Beerbear on both vocals and bass and the addition of a second guitarist, Rothon. Having been recorded in a professional studio, this second demo exhibits a more polished sound but still showcases the same unbridled spirit in songwriting of the first. In order to properly reissue both demos, NWN! has rightfully chosen to reproduce the same morbid artwork from the first demo on the jacket of this vinyl LP release. Additionally, it has included an insert that contains the original artwork, photos, hand-written lyrics, and other layout materials from the original cassette releases of both demos. The result is one that serves as a metal time capsule, transporting the listener to a region and era where the music existed not simply as a sterile product of its own, but rather as a living extension of its practitioners.
