Expander “Endless Computer” LP
ANTI-GOTH 352

(Description by C. Conrad)
Although black and death varieties of metal have largely thrived in the modern era, it has been conspicuously more difficult over the past decade or more to find a thrash band that both follows in the strong traditions of its forefathers and at the same time pushes beyond established boundaries to develop a sound that is unique unto itself, rather than being a stale form of mimicry of the subgenre’s heyday. Hailing from Austin, Texas, and to this point having released two EPs, Expander has broken the mold and developed its own niche through a novel concoction and recombination of musical and thematic elements that broadly span the genres of metal and punk. Expander’s music, lyrical themes, and chosen artwork are decidedly futuristic without being gratuitously experimental. The most appropriate point of reference that one might choose in drawing a direct comparison would be to “Killing Technology”-era Voivod. Expander, however, is noticeably more aggressive than its Canadian predecessor in its approach and delivery, which is clearly demonstrated on “Endless Computer,” the band’s debut album, hereby released by Nuclear War Now! The concept behind the album is that of a shapeless cosmic entity which represents the pinnacle of technological advancement and seeks autonomous control over all atomic matter in the universe. This vision is musically reflected in the myriad of oftentimes unconventional riffs and progressions that manage to tunnel their way into the inner-consciousness of the listener and subvert independent cognition, much in the same way that a digital virus infects and takes control first of a single machine and then progressively engulfs entire networks of them. Not to be underestimated with respect to its overall impact on this album is the level of mindfulness to all aspects of production on this recording. Whereas a great deal of metal, particularly that of the black/death variety, runs a high risk of overproduction, thrash metal with a futuristic focus, such as this, benefits immensely from a healthy degree of attention to clarity and precision, which is proven in this case. Also a product of the band’s diligence in capturing the best possible recording was its decision to faithfully reproduce its live sound to the greatest extent possible. To this end, the band transported its entire backline from its home base in the heart of Texas to faraway GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts, rather than rely on the house equipment to only approximate the desired outcome. The final nod to detail is the perfectly representative cover artwork by Luca Carey, with whom the band worked very closely to ensure that the artwork reflected the lyrical themes of the music as accurately as possible. Given the blistering pace at which humankind increasingly finds itself entangled in the web of its own creations, “Endless Computer” may indeed serve as a harbinger of the fate that we have sealed for ourselves.

Baxaxaxa "Hellfire" MLP
ANTI-GOTH 344

(Description by J. Campbell)
In 1992, Baxaxaxa released their only demo, called “Hellfire.” Originally released as a cassette in a very limited quantity, it was largely unknown until the Ungod/Baxaxaxa split release by Merciless Records in 2002. Baxaxaxa emerged as a side project of three other bands from the Bavarian region of Germany—Cabal, Fulgor, and Ungod—and is simultaneously both a synthesis of and a departure from those bands’ styles. 25 years later, few traces of the band’s history remain. The origin of Baxaxaxa was unremarkable. During a night of drinking in 1991, four members of the aforementioned bands (Condemptor – drums, Unholy Worshipper of Shub - guitars, Ancient Blasphemic Grave Invocator – guitars/vocals, and Skullcrusher – keyboards/vocals) decided they should embark on a side project with the intention of creating Black Metal that was aggressive and deeply rooted in tradition, but also steeped in atmosphere. The name Baxaxaxa was selected by guitarist Unholy Worshipper of Shub before the band’s first rehearsal and refers to a demon he found in a now-lost-and-forgotten book. The band’s logo was created by a Canadian tape trader with whom drummer Condemptor was connected, and the cover artwork was done by Infamist of Tumulus, the vocalist for Ungod at the time. Consisting of just four songs, the “Hellfire” demo constitutes the entire discography for the band. They wrote them over the course of several rehearsals in 1991-92 and recorded them during a live session in a friend’s basement studio (referred to as BSP Sound Studio). The recording was primarily to memorialize the work, as it was already understood at the time of the recording that it would be end of Baxaxaxa, each member being more deeply focused on his other projects. Considering when they were written, the four songs on this demo represent an inflection point for Black Metal toward a slower, more melancholy sound and the incorporation of keyboards. Baxaxaxa’s sound clearly bears the influence of seminal bands like Bathory and Masters Hammer, but also that of emerging contemporaries like Rotting Christ and The Gathering. “Church of the Antichrist,” the keyboard-laden opening track, establishes the environment into which the rest of the demo settles. The core of the song is assertive, mid-paced Black Metal, sinister and haunting and encircled by melodious keyboards that give the track a mournful quality. Only the second track, “Nocturnal Mass and Christ’s Damnation,” is unadorned by keyboards, but it’s also the band’s most frenetic track and the boldest display of traditional Black Metal on “Hellfire.” The last two songs inhabit the same darkened mystical space as the first, featuring moribund riffs accentuated by keyboards. Repetition is central to the effect of these songs; riffs and passages are drawn out and ritualized, amplifying their aura. Although Baxaxaxa only recorded this single demo, looking back, one observes not only the superb nature of the songwriting, but also how significant and ahead of its time it was. For that reason, this recording, too seldom given the attention it deserves, needs to be revisited and reconsidered. To that end, NWN! is honored to present this definitive edition, released for the first time as a proper 45 RPM 12” EP.

Wrathprayer / Force of Darkness “Wrath of Darkness” Split CD
ANTI-GOTH 335

(Description by C. Conrad)
Chile’s storied history within the greater context of the South American black/death metal underground is extended with “Wrath of Darkness”, a joint LP from two of the country’s most respected current bands, Wrathprayer and Force of Darkness. Whereas most releases of this type are generally regarded as “splits,” owing to the separate nature of each band’s contribution, “Wrath of Darkness” is instead aptly considered a whole work, given the close-knit alliance between the two bands. Each individual element – including the music itself, art direction, and overall thematic concept – was deliberately developed in a collaborative effort involving both entities with the singular goal of producing the most cohesive release possible. The result of this endeavor, hereby released under the proud banner of Nuclear War Now!, is one that clearly validates the several years of work required for its realization. Although Wrathprayer and Force of Darkness differ to a noticeable extent in the details of the composition and execution of their music, they are clearly united in that their styles are most firmly rooted in the black metal subgenre. On the one hand, Wrathprayer blends the foreboding nature of black metal with an oppressive, suffocating aura more commonly associated with death metal. Force of Darkness, on the other hand, peppers its interpretation of black metal with an impressive array of razor-sharp, blisteringly-precise riffs that tend to resemble the most evil variants of thrash. The individual contributions by both bands are perfectly bookended and bound by the intro, “Inhaling Wrath,” performed by Wrathprayer, and the outro, “Exhaling Darkness,” performed by Force of Darkness. The five intervening tracks – two by Wrathprayer and three by Force of Darkness – are emblematic of two bands at the creative apex of their existence. Highlighting Wrathprayer’s side of the record is “De Profundis,” which opens with a chorus of desperate cries from the depths of the fiery pit and is then quickly consumed by a swirling maelstrom of aural ire. Force of Darkness then inherits this storm and multiplies it, culminating in “The Order,” a near-seven-minute opus that lays waste to any semblance of meagerness that may have somehow withstood the previous assaults. With the whole of this work greater than the mere sum of its parts, Wrathprayer and Force of Darkness effectively redefine the notion of the split release and instead revive the more noble ideal of true collaboration, in service of darkness and wrath.

Perverted Ceremony Tapes Back In Stock

7th pressing with silver shell and black ink.

Perverted Ceremony “Demo 1″ Cassette Tape
ANTI-GOTH 320

(Description by C. Conrad)
In 2016, it is relatively rare but refreshingly authentic to discover a band that has nurtured its craft and spread its disease through more traditional underground means. Formed in shrouded obscurity in Belgium in 2011, Perverted Ceremony harnessed the ritualistic vitriol of influences such as Beherit, Archgoat, and Demoncy to record its own unique six-song promo/demo during the first half of 2012. Rather than relying exclusively on the ubiquitous convenience of the internet to spread its demented gospel, the band first circulated a handful of dubbed copies of this recording to its closest contacts and then sent a limited number of the same self-released cassette to a few respected underground distros. It was in this time-honored way that the band caught the attention of Nuclear War Now!, who was impressed enough to offer to further the metastasis of a sound that the label immediately recognized as one inhabiting the same infernal spheres as early Beherit and Barathrum. As such, this unholy alliance of band and label was spawned and NWN! now proudly presents the very same “Demo 1” as a pro tape with appropriately updated artwork and layout. Recorded in the evil incubator of the band’s original rehearsal space in subterranean Brussels on analog eight-track equipment, the ceremonial squalor of this demo perfectly matches the truly underground spirit in which it has been disseminated, thus serving as an ominous harbinger of the currently in-progress Perverted Ceremony debut album, also to be released under the auspices of Nuclear War Now!

Perverted Ceremony “Sabbat of Behezaël” MC
ANTI-GOTH 344

(Description by C. Conrad)
A mere matter of months since it released its first official recording, “Demo I,” Perverted Ceremony returns with its uniquely abominable variety of black metal, hereby presenting its debut full-length album, “Sabbat of Behezaël,” under the very same banner of Nuclear War Now! First discovered by NWN! through the time-honored underground tradition of the band spreading self-produced cassettes to a limited number of contacts, Perverted Ceremony’s music reflects the same authenticity and dedication to their craft as their original manner of clandestine distribution. Although the band lists such revered acts as Demoncy, Mystifier, Von, Blasphemy, Profanatica, Archgoat, and Beherit, as their primary influences, their sound tends to gravitate somewhat more towards the latter two (along with Barathrum), who represent the Finnish tradition of bestial black metal. That said, Perverted Ceremony’s style is not easily compartmentalized according to their influences. On the contrary, with their distinctive approach to songwriting, production, and atmosphere, they have achieved a ritualistic blend of black metal that is unique unto itself. Additionally, Perverted Ceremony has proven with this album that the work recorded on its demo, which was already impressive in its own right, was only a snapshot in the band’s development, and one which has now been superseded.
The first of several elements that bind both the demo and the album is the band’s preferred reliance on using the very same analog eight-track recorder for both recordings. This deliberate choice has resulted in a very similarly full and organic, but not overly-refined, production value between the two. Another welcomed constant is the hideously buzzing guitar tone, which combines perfectly with the tremolo-picked riffing style, thus forming what has become one of the band’s trademark characteristics on both recordings. When coupled with the bass, often picking the same infernal note sequences a few octaves below it, the effect is a sound that burrows itself into the mind of the listener and is not easily extricated. On top of that mind-infesting buzz, deft flourishes of guitar leads emerge and rise above this hurtling maelstrom before fully dematerializing, proving to be a critical element that most bands of this type lack. The vocals on this album also inhabit and haunt the same accursed, sub-terrestrial registers as its preceding demo, lending it a most godforsaken aura.
Of course, there are differences between the demo and “Sabbat of Behezaël” which afford the latter a degree of superiority. Gone are the sampled intros of satanic sexual ritual that prefaced most songs on the demo. Though quite appropriate for that type of release, such an inclusion would have proven to be a distraction on a full-length album, and instead they are replaced with more minutes of the band’s own depraved ceremony. Also notable is the inclusion of a greater number and variety of riffs and tempo changes. Individual songs alternate within themselves from blisteringly fast tempos to black doom sequences reminiscent of Norway’s Faustcoven. The sum of these qualities, both formerly established and newly awakened, promise to make “Sabbat of Behezaël” one the highlights, if not THE black metal beacon of darkness of 2017.

Yes I'll make a new TS. Their album covers are rather hard to print on shirts because they're pencil drawings, but we'll try to come up with something interesting.

Chaos Echoes “Mouvement” LP/CD
ANTI-GOTH 376

(Text by J. Campbell)
Since the release of their first real album, “Transient,” in 2015, the members of Chaos Echoes have been working ceaselessly to create a worthy successor to that powerful musical work. NWN! is proud to announce that the band has completed its highly anticipated second album, entitled “Mouvement,” and it is currently in production. Chaos Echoes has spent an entire year working in earnest to gather ideas and compose the material for this album, which was recorded late in 2016. This new album bears some structural similarities to “Transient,” but in sound, style, and theme, it also marks a departure. The band describes the intent behind the album as follows: “The will behind this album was to move towards a form of simplicity and immediacy, and to propose a music that is still focused on spirituality, but where “Transient” was focused on introspection and the individual, the theme of “Mouvement” would be the impact of the environment, the outside world, and the context on that individual.” Following closely behind the release of the band’s “Unfathomable” EP, this new album promises to exceed the expectations established by all of the band’s prior works and will firmly establish Chaos Echoes as one of the most consistently creative and multidimensional bands in the scene.

Chaos Echoes “The Unfathomable” MLP
ANTI-GOTH 339

(Description by J. Campbell)
It’s been more than two years since France’s Chaos Echoes released their debut full length album, “Transient,” which showcased the band’s deft navigation among labyrinthine channels under, around, and through the outer reaches of the extreme metal genre. “Transient” established Chaos Echoes as one of the most compelling and innovative groups of musicians in the scene, and anyone who has witnessed some of their live performances since that time, such as their flawless presentation at NWN! Fest in 2016, has likely been appropriately awestruck by the band’s skill and dynamism. Listeners may recall that interspersed throughout the “Transient” album were improvisational pieces, referred to as “Interzones” (a nod to Burroughs’ “Naked Lunch”), that provided connective tissue between the more heavily constructed songs on the album. Similarly, “The Unfathomable” may be regarded as an Interzone between the aforementioned “Transient” album and Chaos Echoes’ forthcoming full length, entitled “Mouvement,” which will also be released on NWN! Productions. While this EP is intended as a bridge between the band’s first and second albums, it is also an outlier of sorts, in that this recording is more shapeless and ambient than the album material. “The Unfathomable” is one track—the longest piece in the Chaos Echoes catalog—covering a full side of an LP. (The other side features an etching designed by band leader and visual artist, Stefan Thanneur, who created all the artwork for the release.) “The Unfathomable” is among the most evocative and atmospheric pieces Chaos Echoes has performed. Improvised and recorded in Paris in 2015, the track was edited and mixed by former band member Fabien W. Furter. It is desolate, ritualistic, and cold—lunar in its emptiness. It is a hymn to solitude, a collision of intermittent percussion, strings, and electronics, unfolding in slow, churning motions and abandoned to the corrosive machinations of entropy.
