I caught Paradise Lost on the 'Gothic' tour in 1991 and Anathema & My Dying Bride when they toured after 'Serenades' & 'Turn Loose the Swans' in 1993. Great gigs with a great atmosphere.

These are the bands I grew up listening to- I even had the Paradise Lost logo painted on the back of my leather jacket. Turn Loose The Swans was one of the first cassettes I ever bought back when it came out.

While they may have completely changed musically, I saw all three bands this year and they are still really good to watch live.

The missus is an Anathema obsessive. She goes to their gigs regularly abroad and is on good terms with them. She's not into metal and is pretty much only into their newer gear. Not into any of it myself. I switched off after Alternative 4 and haven't even heard that in yonks. Duncan Patterson (the old bassist) lived not far from Dublin from about 2001/2002 until a few months ago. Dead on bloke. Had some funny times pissing about with him. He was a resident on my couch for a while.

I guess one can only do so much with a similar doom/death style like early PL/Anathema/MDB. So, cheers to the three for progressing (for want of a better word) and i kind of dig all their newer works as well.

For me, the classics will still remain as follows nonetheless :

MDB - All their early EPs, 1st album, Turn Loose The Swans and The Angel 7 The Dark River
Anathema - 1st album/EP
PL - Gothic

don't forget the first Nightmare Visions MCD on Metalion's Head Not Found label. I would rate as one of the best DeathDoom releases ever.

I've been meaning to check out Nightmare Visions. Britain seems to churn out quite a bit of doom it seems. Maybe thats because we're miserable fucks over here, though most people are idiotic emo kids.

I saw Anathema at the Milwaukee Metalfest years ago. I really like their old material, but they ended up playing a bunch of gay goth shit. I was really dissapointed about that.

But what about My Dying Bride side-project from 1990 which sounded like perverted bastard son of Blasphemy and Beherit (though they used also Black Sabbath and Metallica riffs)? Not really doom metal though! Anyone knows what I mean?

Think I heard something about that though I can't remember their name. Surprised people into Blasphemy and Beherit would do something as gay as MDB though.

all the early MDB is essential as well at the first 2 paradise lost lp's and the first 3 anathema's...i used to play bass in a band called ceremonium that was influenced by this deathdoom sound as well as the early aborrence and demigod stuff....
