Amazing to see this finally happening. Babylon Whores were always a little bit ill-suited with their surroundings. The record labels (Misanthropy, Necropolis) didn't seem to know what to do with them, and I'm sure that they managed to raised more than one eyebrow when playing gigs with Mayhem, Barathrum, Unpure and others. Would have been ace to see them on the King Diamond tour though.

I dug these reviews from their old site:

Quote:
"You know you´re not listening to a normal album when its first lyrics come from a William Blake poem while the music swings like the band did a Robert Johnson-style deal with Satan. But this is the modus operandi on Babylon Whores´ "Cold Heaven": inspired by some of the world´s great (and deviant) literary minds but delivered with a drunken "what the f***" attitude, achieving a result most others couldn´t even conceptualize. AND this is their debut album to boot. Musically, Cold Heaven is littered with reference points that you know you´ve heard elsewhere, but still remains astoundingly original overall. What appears to be simple and straightforward songs actually abound with subtleties, and new ones appear with each successive listens. Reportedly some members of the band were so consistently inebriated during the album´s recording that they don´t actually remember what it sounds like, but don´t let that fool you - it´s tight as hell, a mix of metal and rock led by the twin guitars of Ewo Meichem and Antti Litmanen. Over the space of several listens, here´s a list of bands with whom there was some sort of stylistic or musical parallel: Samhain/Danzig, 80´s Metallica, Helmet, Type O Negative, mid-80`s Iron Maiden, late 70´s Judas Priest, Down, Hawkwind and Slayer - good company by anyone´s standard. Frontman Ike Vil is the man behind the madness, delivering the vocals in a straightforward, unembellished style. No screaming, no yelling, no growling, not even the occasional "Yeah!" for emphasis. It´s just singing, understated yet brilliant and totally appropriate. Again, subject matter and lyrical style are fantastic, whether it´s the literary/academic references in "Omega Therion", the philosophical questions of "Beyond the Sun", or what appears to be hallucination / sickness / drug references in "Babylon Astronaut" and "Enchiridion for a Common Man." And through it all, these guys could probably outdrink the Loaded magazine staff while simultaneously lecturing them on the joy and pain of excessive hedonistic behaviour. But what to call this music? The term "Death Rock" has always had an appealing ring to it, but the term seems to have been used primarily in recent years by non-music types who want to use a "cool" catch-all phrase to describe musical acts as diverse as Marilyn Manson, Joy Division, The Misfits or anyone else who wears black. But Babylon Whores have proudly slapped "Death Rock" in big letters right on the back of the CD cover, so it´s official: Cold Heaven is what Death Rock is supposed to sound like. In that case, Hail Death rock."

Andrew Carter, Terrorizer (UK)
(album of the month AUG 1997)

Quote:

"Babylon Whores, my arse! How can you call yourselves Babylon Whore when you´re from Finland? Imagine every 100 per cent metal band of the last 20 years from Iron Maiden and the NWOBHM throught to Metallica and Thrash, right up to today´s Euro Metal, and you will arrive on the doorstep of Helsinki, hometown of Babylon Whore. Unfortunately, you will also arrive at the hugest pile of cheesy, second rate, naff bollocks this side of Kremlin. The whole album sounds as if it´s been recorded live, giving it an awfully untogether sound. Babylon Whore have chosen to call their music death rock, but we like to think of it as bollock rock."
Neil Aldi, Metal Hamme (UK)

Ike nowadays sings in a band called Sleep Of Monsters, who have just recorded an album and are searching for a record label to release it. Judging from the short samples it's more earthbound, to put it that way. I think I'll refrain from further comments until I hear the album.

One more bump for this.
They are looking for live photos from the era with Jake still in the band. Maybe some Germans here saw them on tour back then and has some photos?
First single from the Sleep Of Monsters' debut album can be purchased from here;

I know that Steffen has been looking for some news, so here I go again!
Quote:
The Babylon Whores 6LP box "Pride of the Damned" has grown in leaps and bounds into a veritable treasure trove. Containing the complete BW recordings including rare and unreleased songs, the box will also include a 100-page A4 booklet – or should we say ‘book’! – featuring a 23-page history of the band written by Mikko Mattila of Isten Fanzine. The entirety is richly illustrated with 100+ photographs, interviews and what not… some special guest commentators perhaps? Stay tuned for more information. Suffice to say it will be massive!
..., it's six LPs in black cardboard covers plus a 100 page book in a box... I'd say it'll end up in the 55-65 euro price range, depending on the final specs....

Will hit the fan in November.

Anyone familiar with Stray Toasters? I used to have it on tape somewhere but not able to find any upload online.

Dark metallic rock from Savo. Guitarist/vocalist Tapio Wilska went on to Wizzard and Furthest Shore, guitarist Litmanen to Babylon Whores (Toasters song "Alive" resurfaced as "In Arcadia Ego" on Babylon Whores' "Cold Heaven" album). Drummer Käyhkö has directed music vids for Nightwish and so on.

@euroboy;
Stray Toasters never really worked for me. You can find some songs from youtube.
Sleep Of Monsters debut album is out now; I'm sure that it won't be hitting the charts on this forum, but just in case if you want to check out what Ike is doing today;

Aces! Thank you very much for the heads-up once more. Ouch, the retail price for the 12" plus shipping at Record Shop X kinda bites you in the ass, and so I'm trying to get some copies of the record for distribution over here in Germany. Fingers crossed for a reply from the label. Looking forward to the album.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat news about the Whores box set as well, of course.

"Pride of the Damned" is up for pre-order at High Roller as we speak. Way to save some money on postage, my friend. Oh my, 2014 is gonna start devilishly good, and I can't wait to get that damn thing. By the way, does one of you know if the initial cover art is used for the albums or will there be a uniform layout for the cover sleeves like e. g. with Sorhin's "Förbannade År..." box set?

Monday, 10th of February, seems to be the new release date. I read somewhere that they had some issues with putting the actual box together.
