Regular fonts are the fuckin best, especially when the band is actually extreme.

A well chosen and placed serif font is always better than one of those completely overused decorative fonts such as Zombie Holocaust.

...and this is the reason the question was put forth.

i do disagree a bit here, but perhaps that's just because when i got into death metal strange drawn logos was all we got.

i would not want to wear a death metal t-shirt with a regular font. another genre, perhaps, like post-metal or anything like that. not death metal, i want candles, gore, dripping blood. i want the whole package. extreme music and extreme logos.

As long as it's tasteful.

I'd say there are more bands with shitty illegible logos worthy of criticism.

there has to be some play with the image, though, right? like with the battle clone logo you did? it's simple but not just the first font microsoft word produced.

It's also different when a band uses a font for a logo or for text. Generally a logo should never be unmodified decorative text, which looks completely lazy after more than two bands use it. Most text comprised of decorative fonts also looks like ass, regardless of if you are actually supposed to be able to read it or not.

That was a pretty illustrative logo and not based on any font even though it was fairly legible. Logos don't always need to be that illustrative or decorative. Some times a tiny logo in a common or subdued font can look pretty sinister.

Not to be nitpicky, but a 'font' refers to the combination of typeface and size, pitch, and spacing... I think the word you're after here is 'typeface'. Additionally, if you want to be even more nitpicky, critique of letterspacing might be more suited in this context. I think the typeface coupled with the illustration works just fine.

Sometimes those drawn logo's with all kinds of details are more a visual reference than words.
A simple but classy font can draw more attention to the name of a band.

Type O Negative used a plain typeface the best.

I'd prefer a bland typeface to a generic original logo. A lot of band logos are starting to look like the same thing.
