I was listening to FLESHCRAWL's Impurity today, whose third song is a DEMIGOD cover, and realized how annoying I find it when bands throw a cover song in the middle of an album. More often than not it harms the flow of the album. Same sort of thing for OBITUARY's Cause of Death and SCUM's Mother Nature.

If they're going to include a cover, I think it's better to have it right at the end. Am I alone here?

The end should be the biggest, best, most badass song on an album. Maybe putting the cover at the end of the first side would be best.

I'm inclined to agree with our friend eighthplague here... the end of the album should be a Rime of the Ancient Mariner moment, not a lazy Venom cover played none for note but worse....

Save the covers for a split 7" unless you're going to make it your own enough that it doesn't actually disrupt the flow of an album (see Reverend Bizarre's cover of Dunkelheit)....

I'd rather bands save covers for gigs.

I totally agree, Unleashed is pretty good at putting unnecessary covers in the middle of their albums (countess bathory, and breaking the law to name a few). I actually love Obituary's Circle of the Tyrants cover but they should have saved it for an ep or something. Covers are only really cool when they're played live in my opinion.

Always felt kind of bummed about the Venom cover right in the middle of Hypocrisy's Osculum Obscenum, it's so boring. But then again for example O.L.D. doing Eric Clapton's Cocaine totally defends it's position on the album!

Most the older Judas Priest records have cover songs in the middle of them; I am okay with that.

I don't think nobody has anything bad to say about Better Than You Better Than Me. It fits perfectly with their own songs there.

70s Priest were the masters of cover songs.

70s Priest were the masters of cover songs.

Those songs are the perfect example of how to cover a song, and by extension how to integrate it within the album. They totally made them their own and flow perfectly from original=>cover=>original FLIP to side B.

However, in most cases I agree that cover songs should be saved for EPs, compilations and things of that sort...in most cases.

The Curse is right in the middle of War Cult Supremacy, and i'm sure nobody has a problem with that.

Never really minded the "Iron Fist" cover on Persecution Mania.

As Obituary is heavily influenced by Celtic Frost anyway, I never really thought that Circle of the Tyrants had an ill-effect on the record's flow in any way. In fact, the cover is done so well, I always contended that if you'd never heard CF before, you'd think it was just one of the songs written for COD. It's a great song and cover.

in the middle might mean the end of a vinyl side though, which makes it less annoying.

but yes, it might seem petty but last or second to last is the best spot.

also depends on how, much you make the song your own. Repugnants Morbid cover could have been anywhere on thatrrecord.
