Is there an English translation out there of Kittelsen's Svartedauen book? I figure there must be some serious readers posting here that might know. I can't find it online it seems.

Yes, without the 'slang' = people pretty into reading that might know nerdy shit like a book's different editions and so on.

Any replies related to the actual question at hand? I've only ever owned a pretty poor calender with his prints.

Not sure. Just looked around on amazon but couldn't really find it. Did get a book about trolls "retold" by Joanna Asala with a lot of his illustrations in it.

Don't nail me down on it, but I'm pretty damn sure such an edition doesn't exist at all. When I tried to get a copy it was quite a research, bought one in Norway in the end, and apart from being nearly impossible to get outside of Norway no one I talked to has ever come across an English edition including several Norwegian book dealers and I guess they got to know.

I have this translation of one of the fifteen poems/prosaic tales at hand.

Pesta on the Stairs
(Pesta i trappen)

She was small, lean, and bent, her face greenish-yellow with black spots.
Her eyes were squinting, dark and restless and set deep in her skull now
and again a strange, evil light shone in them, and they flickered round in
every direction, so that it was impossible to fix her gaze.
Her head bobbed up and down. Her mouth moved rapidly - sharp and bitter.
She was worse than the plague itself, I thought to myself, hence her name.

That's what I thought, thanks for the information. I've never been able to find a copy either (obviously I guess) and it's pretty fucking frustrating. I have a lot of his illustrations from various sources but really want to read the poems going with them. Thanks a lot for that translation by the way, I assume there isn't more where that came from?

On a related note, I always wondered why the hell Satyricon didn't just use his artwork as the cover on Dark Medieval Times. I've had the booklet flipped around to depict the '1349' inlay piece instead of that shit-ass cover for years and keep forgetting how much the real cover sucks.
