Originality for originality's sake no, innovative and meaningful yes! What are some bands out there now, new bands mind you, that are pushing the boundaries without being gimmicky? Provide sites & samples as necessary.

good idea. what is a new band though? say first release(s) this decade?

Garden of Worm
http://www.myspace.com/gardenofworm

The River
http://www.myspace.com/doomriver

why? both develop traditionally minded Doom Metal in respectful ways. Garden of Worm have a very peculiar progressive edge to their Finnish sound. The River's sound aesthetic is akin to Warning's last album, equally revolutionary as a kind of condensed emotionality - very different from traditionally heavy rocking Doom molds, but while Warning stripped down the soundpicture, The River envelops the listener with a room-filling ultra-heavy guitar tone.

it's rather similar for the next two, if they're allowed to pass for new bands. Revelation returned from a long hiatus to an old lineup. Memory Driven is the music of Dennis Cornelius (ex-Revelation, ex-Oversoul, ex-Dwell Within) with a new band. both bands develop Doom Metal along older formulas to new forms. true artists.

though not enough goats in this post I guess.

plus

Legacies Unchain
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=19667

Misantropical Painforest
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=30945

and to a lesser extent Hail. why? because they give us a glimpse of the awesome madness black/death/war metal could be if newer bands just took the atmospheres of 'His Majesty At The Swamp' and 'Drawing Down The Moon' more serious and developed those further, instead of being content with playing Blasphemy note for note.

^^^^ If you're into melodic/atmospheric black metal this is perfect stuff. I really enjoy songs like "We buried him...." and "White Haired" especially.

Some recent "new" faves:

BONESAW (UK)

Death Metal sleaze in the Abscess/Autopsy vein with other interesting psycho-delic touches... Sawtopsy's probably the best DM album this year in my opinion.

DISKORD (Nor)

Amazing technical (at a certain level) Death Metal. Unnerving and transgressive stuff that strikes rapid flashbacks of Autopsy (Acts...), Cadaver, Darkthrone (DM-era), Voïvod, Demilich etc..., but definitely unique stuff the way Wilhelm described in his initial post, just take a listen if you haven't already. Doomscapes is one huge mindfuck of an album.

some very cool stuff here: Diskord, Obsequiae, Mitochondrion.. I'd add Cosmic Atrophy. very much looking forward to that album.

http://www.myspace.com/atrophyhouston

bands like this make me forget the hate I developed for 'technical' Death over the years.
