I was reading an interview with a band in some old zine (can't recall the band nor the zine) and they had this thing going where you could send them a few dollars and a blank cassette tape and they would record a rehearsal for you using your average hand held cassette player.

Personally I think thats a great idea and bands should do that more these days. It's not exactly a challenge to put a tapedeck on the floor and go about a rehearsal, and it can be used to hold fans over untill an offical release comes around.

Thoughts? Anyone willing?

I never got the idea behind that "send blank tape" thing anyway! Because you actually pay more in shipping than sending a few bucks for the tape itself.

It's a pretty cool idea indeed. Seems time consuming though.

Is it anymore time consuming than waiting 2-3 years for material to be offically released when someone can just put a tapedeck on the floor and go about rehearsing?

Personally I don't see any down side to it. The band gets a bit of money in pocket from the few dollars sent for a rehearsal, that money adds up over time and eventually could be used for merch or other stuff.

Now I can see how that COULD end up time consuming on the bands part, but only if they took it upon themselves to record and individually dub the tapes.

I think it comes down to making things easier for the band. At least I'd be much more willing to distribute rehearsal tapes if people sent in tapes (so I didn't have to hunt them down from local outlets) and, with domestic correspondence, a stamped return envelope.

i think the idea itself is cool, but i agree with daniel about the strange idea of sending blank tapes. dont know if its that hard to get tapes in the usa, but here its easy to order a load of blank tapes and they are way cheaper than buying them at a supermarket/store

Tapes are relatively easy to find in Finnish stores as well. However, like I said, if you're not passionately interested in spreading rehearsal tapes by your band, the question of choosing between having a tape & a stamped envelope delivered to you and going the extra mile by getting them yourself can make or break... Smile

but i mean IF the band offers it, they should be interested in spreading a reh, right Wink
so they dont even have to move at all, just order some tapes (ok they have to "invest" some money on the tapes)

I think is a good idea, anyway is faster to send money to buy the tape and pay the post than sending a blank tape+stamps etc... ins't it?

Why not do the sensible option and record one good rehearsal then use that as a master to make copies from. Most rehearsal rooms have CD recorders.

And to go a step further, make a decent quality cover, release it a rehearsal tape and it'll be much more interesting to people.

the shitty quality, not every band has a good tape recorder and know about placement etc. Whats the point of getting a rehearsal tape if you cant even understand whats happening.

But then again, there are good almost sound board sounding ones.

Quality shouldn't be such a big deal. And to combat the "bootlegs" idea above: Why would someone bootleg a rehearsal tape when people can just write the band and get one of their own.

As I said, why not just do an official one as a release for people who would be interested.
