I like actualy folk music (Woody Guthrie, etc...), but don't like it mixed with metal. Can't dig the flutes and fiddles and what not. Always comes off as goofy, like that god-awful Korpaklaanii band....

Butterfly Temple from Russia are one of my most favourite bands. They are pretty much folk influenced, melodic and with keyboards but not like these happy sing-along folk bands.

Folk metal can be good if there's mostly no keyboards or some traditional instruments just for the sake of using them. Also, no need for jolly drinking songs or guitar wankery, I hate what this genre is these days, but there are some awesome bands like Temnozor. Bands like Korpiklaani are utter shit.

Some quick question:..

do Viking bands (at least lirically/image) make folk music, for example I hear in Jormungard nothing but black metal, no folk music, maybe just som classical or medieval sounding parts...

You'd probably love Fen, who sound just like Agalloch, and The Morningside.

doing it with style: Isengard, Primordial, Bak de Syv Fjell, Grimm, Heimat, Taake

not doing it with style: Temnozor, Butterfly Temple, Arkona, Korpiklaani, Finntroll

it's all about subtlety here.

Taake for sure is not doing anything with a "style". Fuck Taake.
