So, a German company wanted to buy 10x LPs, 5x 7"s, and 10x CDs. I quoted $60 for shipping, and they complained and canceled the order.

Annoying, but not a big deal.

I posted above wondering if the cost would be similar if the shipment went in the other direction. Not surprisingly, it was.

Then just for curiosity, on their website, I put 10 random LPs in my shopping cart, proceeded to checkout, and was quoted $70 for shipping.

That is my story for the day.

Depends if they sent the stuff with DHL, or if they split the order in 2kg parcels for Deutsche Post or if they use another oversea transport carrier.

Or, well, or they want to cash a bit in...

That sounds about right for that many items. People still don't seem to know that Surface Mail has been gone for years.

I never actually sent anything to Europe via the Boat. They said it could take up to six weeks, was that true?

How does one check the status of a registered package from Germany?

the usual way, if it was shipped as a package via deutsche post/DHL, check out www.dhl.de (should be available in english too); of course it's down atm so I can't check it right now.

if it was sent as a registered letter, check www.deutschepost.de/briefstatus =>einzelabfrage

Back in the old days (1989-1991), we'd pool our money and make big ($200) orders from Nuclear Blast for stuff. It'd go surface, and it'd take 6 or more weeks to arrive to the U.S., and we'd get together, have a drunken party and open the stuff!

Thanks for your help; said package was at customs on the 1st of Nov., same with my other package from Finland; I wish they would deliver them both already, they're costing me time and money.

Canada still has surface mail options - it's so much cheaper (about 50% - 75% less than normal), but it takes from 6-8 weeks to arrive at destination in the worst cases.

In the US, they eliminated that shipping option.
