Switzerland's Paysage d'Hiver sits amongst the best in creating truly an enveloping experience with their brand of atmospheric black metal. Wintherr has released under the PdH moniker numerous demos and splits (each more or less 40+ minutes) spanning all the way back to 98'. From the relentless barrage of a swirling winter maelstrom to crystalline ambiance, PdH is one band that I feel has truly captured the grim, frigid and frostbitten atmosphere that so many black metal bands through the ages tout.

With that being said, I'm curious to hear everyone's opinion regarding PdH and their releases. Is there one release which everyone considers to be the best? What are your thoughts on the band? To start the discussion I'll say that I think my favorite is Schattengang. It was the first of PdH's works that I'd heard, and the one which I find myself coming back to most often.

edit: Unfortunately it wouldn't let me post all of their demos and splits as that was "too many poll options", so I went ahead and axed the splits. If that happens to be your favorite material just post about it in the thread.

I think I'm the minority here but I've never got into this band... I still give them a chance from time to time but no dice.

My vote goes to Das Tor since it's the only one I remember about right now Confused

Are the first couple of A-5 CDs ever going to be repressed?

Having a hard time deciding between the s/t and Winterkalte. For me it boils down to the songs Welt Aus Eis vs. Finsternis.

I had to vote for Schattengang as it was the first one I heard, and the bleak doomy sounds of Moloch followed up by the long second track really impressed me. Also, the artwork perfectly captures the feeling and mystery of the music. But I love all of his releases because they each tend to have their own character and their own take on his style. It was definitely worth it to track down all of the A5's.

Das Tor is probably the least unique of them, but the songs are so strong that it dosen't matter. When I first put it on and heard those wind samples I knew it was going to be a treat.

Steineiche. it was the first i heard and clicked with me instantly.
second fav, song Des Lichtes Sterben II from Nacht.
overall bm work is genius while ambient monotonous and boring.

Same here. Dude uses the same wind and snow crunch samples, vocal effects are grating, guitar boring. Drums....
Anyhow, Nacht was my favorite.

Voted Kerker for the claustrophobic, doomy atmosphere.

I love all Paysage d'Hiver albums though, including the splits with Lunar Aurora and Vinterriket. Paysage's tracks on the "Schneesturm" and "Wurzelgeister" VAs are also very good!

Can't wait until it starts snowing here...

A band that I have never understood. Would much rather Darkspace.
