Like it/hate it/don't care? May sound like a dumb question, but honestly I think I prefer when a band uses the same artwork (or versions of the same artwork) for all editions of a release. Be it tape, CD, vinyl, reissue ten years later, whatever. I know with some reissues they can't find a good copy of the original art or can't get the rights, so they do something new; that's understandable. And sometimes the original art just sucked so there's nothing wrong with upgrading when the opportunity presents. But you see like the Merciless "Unbound" reissue where they had the original art but for some reason put it inside the layout, and do a generic black cover with the band logo - why? Or the reissue of "All the Witches Dance" where they zoomed in on the original photo and left off the band logo and album title - again, why? That is just a weird decision.

And I've seen a lot of recent releases where the tape, CD and vinyl all had different covers... that's just peculiar to me. I consider art part of the overall release package, and with these wildly different covers the music almost feels different (of course that's silly, but hopefully you know what I mean). A lot of labels I love have done this - NWN with Vanhelgd, Detest with the upcoming Ascended tape. I'm sure both of these are in accordance with the band's wishes and the different artworks are very good, in their own right; yet I think I still would have preferred the original art. The Vanhelgd CD cover is a little cheesy but fits their music perfectly, even though the LP cover is probably aesthetically better designed and colored. The Ascended MCD cover looks a bit like an old Seagrave thing, which is cool.

I dunno, anybody agree or disagree? Yosuke and Jerry - I suck and ought to shut up, yes? Very Happy

You know how I feel about this. I won't even release a re-issue LP unless I can use the original cover art. Wink

This issue needs to be taken on a case by case basis.

However, there are cases when it is an absolute abomination....like the CGI version of the s/t Iron Maiden debut !!! WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SHIT??? WHY would they EVER mess with that original painting ???

Iron Maiden's "Dance of Death" would benefit from a new cover though !! ....it couldn't possibly be any worse. Shocked

Yes, I won't be a total hypocrite because Crypt of Kerberos - Wold of Myths Adipocere CD cover was garbage. Both myself and the band agreed, so we are using different art (NO PHOTOSHOP art), but so far that is the only instance where it has been changed on our roster. The new cover art RULES, so I don't think anyone will be disappointed.

Usually prefer when all version comes with same artwork, especially when we talk about reissues (!), but sometimes is cool when tape version for same release come with other artworks than CD or LP.

I never liked the retarded goat head pentagram for the Peaceville Pentagram reissues. It's good to see at least their using the original cover for "Day of Reckoning" on the latest CD reissue.

I think that's a good case of where it's fine to change it. Some great metal albums have really shitty or indifferent covers - "World of Myths" is one example, and I'm not fond of Mordicus "Dances From Left" (not horrible but it doesn't really evoke their music, at least for me - a better and darker picture of basically the same idea might work better). For the most part though, like 98% of the time I think it's better to stick to the original.

As long as the "design" is the same (For example Katharsis´ WWE) it's ok.

Sometimes it is done well. The new (LP) cover for the Hail - Inheritance of Evilness is a fine upgrade from the artwork on the original CD, while still capturing its essence.

Goatlord "refections of the solstice" LP I did has the black/white version of the artwork which I like much more than the full color one that Turbo used. Turbo also used a font instead of their actual logo. The JL America cover on the other hand sucks ass.

My Dying Bride- Turn Loose The Swans has different art for the cassette/cd/vinyl and they all look awesome (the cassette being my favourite).

The Goatlord LP looks much better than the Turbo CD, and it is the original artwork from Moyen so that is awesome.
