I'm not really into Bulgarian BM yet, but once I am, I'll drop you a line.

You need to hear Aryan Art; get past the overly rum band name and check out 'Ще Позволим Ли Да Погребат Родината Ни?' and '...И Берем Плодовете На Нашето Нехайство'. Judging by the other bands you've covered, I'm hazarding a guess they would fit your remit - a perfect blend of romanticism and rawness.

Thanks guys!

For the moment, is there by chance anyone who can understand Belarusian? The album I'll be reviewing after my convoluted Dub Buk review is finished (if God is willing), is in Belarusian and Russian.

The Drang nach Osten continues: after a longer-than-planned hiatus, the Black Ivory Tower strikes back with an exhaustive review of Dub Buk's Rus ponad use! album in the familiar BIT style, albeit with a heavier focus on philosophy than usual. So much so that it sort of turned into an essay rather than a review.

Dub Buk - Rus ponad use!

Dub Buk Above the Whole World

Excerpts:

"[Contemporary art is] Nihilistic in the sense that it occupies itself with problems that are not actually problems, or because alleged ‘injustice’ is combatted exclusively by means of blind, dim-witted rage."

"But still, one tends to get the impression at times that this is the work of a couple of guys who did not really know what they were doing, which accidentally resulted in a magnificent album somehow. The unlikelihood of this scenario is confirmed by the fact that, before making Rus ponad use, Dub Buk had already recorded two magnificent albums (Misjac pomsty and Idi na wy!). But in a way, the suspicion of amateurism actually augments the experience, seeing as it renders the entire ordeal just so delightfully unpretentious."

"In the end, it is the contrast between naivety and brilliance – the use of lesser resources to create something with more quality – that characterises Slavic metal in general, but Dub Buk in particular."

This is awesome! I've always been curious about their lyrics but I figured Google Translate would do a better job at butchering them rather than actually translating...

I guess the lyrics lose some of their essense outside of the original French, but they're still genius.

The Crusade commences! The voice of comrade Maximus cuts through unbelievers and Western self-haters like the sword of justice with its rampant steel taming vile barbarian hordes attempting to tarnish the splendour of Europa. In a masterfully crafted essay, the epic nature of the works of Summoning, Caladan Brood, and Atlantean Kodex is examined and clarified. Maximus, who in my opinion stands firmly as one of the most talented music writers I have ever witnessed, sets out his aesthetic for metal while demonstrating complete domination of all theory involved. An absolute must-read:

The White Echoes of Morning's Dawn: Profiling the Epic

Excerpts:

"Each Summoning album tells its own tale; each one of their albums is as categorically different from any other as 'The Lord of the Rings' is to 'The Hobbit', or 'The Children of Hurin' is to 'The Silmarillion'. This is why the band decides to write a record on their own terms, when the inspiration for a new legend arrives – if it were otherwise we might wonder if an album was merely the superfluous extension of its predecessor. At any rate, we have been truly blessed this year with the visionary accomplishment that is 'Old Morning’s Dawn', a release which is without question the finest release of 2013, and a release which actually surpasses every other Summoning album since their magnum opus, 'Dol Guldur'."

"The White Goddess is therefore a subtle inclination to, dare we say it, the allegedly oxymoronic ‘Christian metal’. That it is subtle is necessary; any kind of explicit Christian imagery or evangelical fire-breathing and it runs the risk of being just another exaggerated, preachy effort of ‘Christian’ musicians (such as Mortification and Frost Like Ashes) who completely misinterpret the nature of heavy metal."

"To the everlasting annoyance of neo-pagan adolescents, limp-wristed fedoratheists, and occultist, ‘satanic’ black metallers, Atlantean Kodex pay tribute to what the Christian faith has positively accomplished, as can be seen in the excerpt of a Churchill speech that is incorporated into "Twelve Stars and an Azure Gown", one of the most excellent anthems for the enduring strength and pride of Europe in living memory."
