Altaar - Dodsonske

I hate it to be the nitpicking kind of guy, but "Dødsønske" was released in 2009 already. That doesn't change the fact that this year's self-titled debut full-length seems to get lost in the shuffle of mediocre yet talked up releases despite its possessive forcefulness.

Dread Sovereign - Pray to the Devil in Man EP

Aye, I fully back that. I have to confess, though, that I was a teensy bit sceptical at first because "Thirteen Clergy to the Flames" was such a catchy and infectious teaser that I wasn't sure if the other two tracks could hold a candle to it as there's such a thin line between catchy and cheesy, but it turned out that they even surpass the "bait" in regard to putting the raw essence of, and I gladly quote Ván's press text here, "raw old school doom / metal [that] touches of late 80s early sepulchral black metal" straight to the point. "Pray to the Devil in Man" is definitely on my top five list for 2013. Thank you once more, Mikael, for your heads up!

It feels like a matter close to my heart to mention The Vein's "Scouring the Wreckage of Time" CD here as well. Absolutely over the top death / doom, and Herr Sparvath constantly proves an instinctive certainty for propulsive riffs and wonderful melodies. It's just classic death / doom at its very beAst! I mean, just listen to a monster like "The Poisoned Chalice", the musical arc of suspense goes right under the skin here imho, this stomping rhythm that furiously culminates in those deeply grieved guitars at 4:58. Now that's metal magic!

Yeah, I messed up. Of course I meant the full-lenght.

Definitely the new AMSG album Anti-Cosmic Tyranny. Brilliant oldschool sounding release with many twists and turns. Caked in saxophone on several songs too. Sorry if this already got mentioned and I missed it.

It's a demo dubbed by the band themselves. Really great stuff. I'd assume it's still available as long as they feel like making copies.
