Any recommendations? I guess I mean more mainstream stuff like Ultravox, Gary Numan, etc.... just to kick off with.

Just the obvious mainstream(-ish) stuff. REM, Bauhaus, PiL, Magazine, Cabaret Voltaire, Talking Heads, Love and Rockets, Lords of the New Church, Ministry, Scratch Acid, lots and lots of punk.

Depeche Mode, of course. Blondie, Kim Wilde, Duran Duran. I used to love (and still do!) Men Without Hats!

I don't know if this is really what you're asking for but some of the more "80s sounding" Rush stuff is really good. Like Grace Under Pressure and Signals.

Good 80s mainstream rock albums, if you're interested:

ACDC - Back in Black
Blackfoot - Tomcattin + Marauder (check their late 70s too)
Dire Straits - Making Movies + Love Over Gold
Rush - Grace Under Pressure
Tom Petty - Hard Promises + Full Moon Fever
Steve Earle - Copperhead Road
Molly Hatchet - Take No Prisoners + Beatin the Odds
GNR - Appetite for Destruction
ZZ Top - Eliminator
SRV - Texas Flood + Couldn't Stand the Weather + Soul to Soul
Rollins Band - Life Time
Cro-Mags - first 2
Black Flag
Soundgarden - Ultramega OK + Badmotorfinger

If you want mainstream new wave-ish, go Tears For Fears. Less known - Wire.

Human League's first two albums are nice and cold and nihilistic (only the second, Travelogue is 80s though). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jC6o3yCXzAo
