Speaking of which, any suggestions for a proper fuzz pedal? Been looking at the Algal Bloom or Red Witch Fuzz God, hm.

I'm from New Zealand and I was never very convinced with Red Witch to be honest. They endorsed Jakob and gave them a bunch of free pedals. When I saw Jakob live they had all those Red Witches on their pedalboards but none of them were patched into their signal chain - they just lie on there and that's it. The resale value of those are not very good locally either, compared to the high retail price.

If you are looking for a good hi gain fuzz that can be obtained at around $150, track down the old Boss FZ-2. Tune into the fuzz ii mode and it's fuckin DESTRUCTIVE. It was in charge of the Come My Fanatics/Dopethrone era Electric Wizard sound.

Interesting info, thanks!

I'll look into the FZ-2. Heard of it but don't know how easy to get it is on the European market. If not, any other ideas? Because jesus christ, there must be a fucking million of pedal builders these days, hard to see the forest through the trees Confused

They have been out of production since a while but you can get them from Japanese sellers on ebay, usually in pretty good shape.

Or get one off Yahoo Japan auctions via bidding agents like Buyee:

The Behringer SF300 is a clone of the FZ-2, which you can get for really cheap. But Behringers are probably not too reliable in the long run.

I've been using the Boss Space Echo lately. Not analog, but it's really warm sounding. MXR's Carbon Copy is really cool too, but I'm pretty fanatical about tap tempo so I go digital.

Is it very hard to get used to setting the "taps"? Ive only played with analog clones as of yet. I almost got the "OG" Space Echo. The real deal tape echo for like 350, but the guy flaked out on me.

Nah, not at all. It's literally as easy as tapping your foot.

Ibanez MMM1 Baritone or Gibson SG Raw Power through a Laney Klipp 50 (1971) and an anonymous 4x12 cabinet. need to get something nice. I push it with a Keeley-modded Boss Super Overdrive. crank as needed. got some other guitars, amps and pedals flying around, but this is what gets most serious play. dirty, bass heavy and pretty damn organic tone.

Oh yeah I knew it was out of production, just meant it's probably a bitch to get 2nd hand in EU. Thanks for the Buyee link, didn't even know that existed.

And agreed, that cabinet is fucking monstrous! How much does it weigh?

can anyone recommend a cheap distortion (<$100) for a LA bay area thrash tone ala james hetfield's 80's tone?>

it doesnt have to sound perfect but I dont have a pedal right now and the amp settings on this shitty Peavey practice amp arent cutting it...

Just put in a pre-order for a Dunwich Amps Cthulhu fuzz, looking forward to how it's gonna sound. Not a bad score with the current exchange rate either.

Anyone have experience with Jet City Amplification? Doubting between the JCA22h and 50h for living room/bedroom-warriorism, home studio stuff and jams/rehearsals. Much better priced than the Orange Terror series and they get pretty good reviews too.

I've been following Dunwich for a bit now, and I like what he's been doing with his Model T/ Orange esque builds. I didnt know he was doing effects, I have to check that out.

I think that the overdrive channel on the Jet City is a copy of the SLO-100s ( Jet City is SOLDANO's Made in China brand), I will check that. If that is indeed the case, then that is as cheap as it gets for that circuit including building it yourself.

I haven't played the Jet City, but I have played an original SLO-100, as well as clones I built myself and I feel that they are great amps. They sound great when playing by yourself, but their value shows when playing an a band environment: they have a certain trebly and upper mid emphasis that means you wont be competing with your bassist for the same slice of the frequency band. They don't compress the same way that high gain amps made afterwards do, like the 5150 or Mesa (which I think is a shit brand for high-gain) meaning your playing technique is highlighted rather than covered up. If you're sloppy, you WILL hear it.
