In 93 i was 9 years old. Back then i listened to Metallica, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Sepultura (remember i loved Chaos A.D. when it came out. So much that i bought the limited tin box that came with a huge flag. Thought it was the coolest thing ever).
It wasn't until a couple of years later i started listen to Death and Black. |

The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation by Kataklysm and 5 Years Nuclear Blast compilation tape come to my mind...
this was caused by my brother... my personal taste was at a completely different state then:
1993 I was 9 years and my favourite music was changing from Roxette over to Metallica and Megadeth... so neither death or black. _________________ my tradelist |

at least you appreciated Finnish BM. most of those Finnish and Swede death and grindcore bands were much better than anything coming out of Norway at that time. _________________ my records

I was 17 and playing death metal at the time, but was always more interested in the content that Incantation and such were writing about, as opposed to the "fun" Bermuda short wearing death metal bands were into. Started getting more and more into BM at the time, but always had a healthy respect for the "heavy" and the almighty RIFF. I supposed that's still the case 20 years later... |

I was listening to both. I was 17 and into real Metal since only two years but was exposed to some good stuff like ENTOMBED, OBITUARY, SEPULTURA, BATHORY, SAMAEL when it comes to the "dark side", and some Thrash and Heavy-Metal too.
I did understand the thing about the life-Metal thing that DM musicians were accused of, but both genres gave me the darkness I needed. I never was fond of fun bands anyway. Nor of purely gore bands too. Then the difference was more about the spirit of the music than about the name of the genre. _________________

I still like using the term "Life Metal" sometimes, mostly when I feel impish and I'm just trolling to get a rise....
I guess some of my manchild ways will never truly die... |

Death with some minor knowledge of Black (Darkthrone, Samael). I don't think the Mayhem LP was released stateside til 94 if I remember. Norse Black Metal was not on the radar until reading about Euro's murder in a news update by Borivoj in Metal Maniacs in late '93 I guess. I remember thinking "thats all these minor players will ever amount to, a couple lines of epitaph in Metal Maniacs... back to my Obituary tape..." Guess I was wrong. If only I'd had the Internet. _________________ http://www.20buckspin.com |

yeah Metal Maniacs was a huge source of info for me at the time. I definitely would not have heard of that shit if it werent for this mag and CM distributing black metal to the US. _________________ When pussy calls your name.....there's no way back. |
