Fuck these threads make me feel old and cantankerous: "I was 13;" "I was 11;" "I was a fetus;" "I am still a fetus."

GET OFF MY LAWN

Wink

(I was 20, lived in California, listened to whatever metal happened my way, and wasn't interested in Scandinavian interscene slap-fights.)

I was 8 years old back then (sorry Xray)... the heaviest band I was listening to was probably Queen or Meat Loaf or something haha. I remember having to choose between Blur or Oasis though... Blur all the way Smile

Suede for me, but Oasis out of those two, because the brothers were at least entertaining.

Ah never really got into Suede. Really don't wanna ruin this guy's thread but yeah Oasis were entertaining for sure. I can't believe me and my friends used to argue about who would win in a fight out of Oasis or Blur...such idiots. Good times.

I was 20 and I was head over heels in DEATH, but knocking on the BLACK door like most Americans. I fully got into BM by late 93/early 94.
Although I did read all of the KERRANG muder articles that summer, it took a while to actually "hear" Mayhem, Burzum, Emperor etc.
No internet in 1993!

In 1993... I was a fourth grader into Europe, Meat Loaf (still into both!) and all kinds of shitty eurodance (had to let it go!). Not a good combination. Yeah I was pretty much shat upon for that, because it was only cool to listen to Metallica or grunge. Lots of good tunes in 90s popular music anyway. MTV played music videos. Next thing you knew it was all gone. I miss those childhood times when you could actually get excited about something - how was that lost?

Didn't know extreme metal until 3-4 years later. I was pretty much alone against all every step of the way, but nonetheless good times.

Fear not xray! I too was 20 in 1993. Old fuckers of the world unite! I was way into Death Fucking Metal, thrash and punk and hardcore. Because I was a college student in a small Missouri town, I didn't hear any of the Norwegian kulting until 95, when I acquired some Darkthrone. I dug it, but I did not declare all death metal gay or any such nonsense. I explored more black metal as time went on, by my allegiance to DM has never faltered. To this day I love bands from both sub-categories equally.

I remember going to recordstore and bought new albums by Grave and Darkthrone, year was 1992 , going home to listen them, Grave was good old Death Metal as previous album and Darkthrone was like what a fuck? expecting soulside death metal and come this. And guys looking booklet pics like old grannys! Hehe!

I remember stalking old AOL grindcore chat rooms in 1996, not having much of an idea what the genre entailed. two years later, I bought a copy of Sepultura - Beneath The Remains and the rest is history.

I was just a kid in 1993 but I know older death metal fans who are still caught up in the scene drama between the two. It's silly, especially when you bring up bands from scenes besides Norway who sometimes border on death metal (like the Greek scene, for example). Black and death metal aren't as restricted to one sound as some people seem to think.
