I know this may be a strange source for the start of a thread, but I was was having a chat with a good friend of mine a few days ago, when the idea of this came up. Record collecting habits can be strange, and I personally have an issue with not having complete collections by bands (even if some of the releases are shit), and even struggle to not own each pressing. I am wondering if this is just me having some form of OCD, or if this is a common thing amongst record collectors?

Go watch the "Vinyl" documentary and see how record collecting becomes compulsive hoarding.

Could be, but no, I'm not. It's more a compulsion I would say.

It's very easy to fall into compulsive behaviour patterns. I used to obsessively collect lps... but nowadays I don't care if I have an album on cd instead/ don't get pissed if I miss out on a lp- because the music is what matters, and that's what record collectors/ hoarders lose sight of. They collect and don't listen.

I mean look at the recent vinyl scores thread- some people are buying 20/30 lps at a time- it is physically impossible to listen to that stuff properly (i.e at least 10-20 listens each) before they are buying more.

Since practically all of my favourite bands have released at least one shitty record in their career by now, I am gladly cured by the neurotic obsession of having complete collections. Also, the internet killed a lot of fun regarding record-hunting.

As for re-releases: Couldn't care less as long as they stay true to the originals (no new artworks, censored parts etc.). I don't feel better with an original release from 1985 when I actually bought it in 200something. But of course, if it is affordable and crossing my way in the right moment, I take it.

Plus I don't think I ever had more than 500 records in general (all formats included). Some new stuff comes, other old stuff goes. Everything else would be waste of space.

I Feel just the same.
20 years ago, I used to buy complete discography of bands I loved.
I recently start to sell some records (it's still hard, even for a CD I don't listen any more...).
My goal now is to build a perfect collection rather than a huge collection.
And I only buy vinyl, I'll stop buying CDs.

+1 Very Happy

Even if I can get a cheap repress of a record that maybe sounds equal or even has bonus material I always prefer a 1st press that costs 10 times as much. And yes, I know I'm sick... Rolling Eyes

That's fucked up. Seek treatment immediately.
