History being revised?
When RIB came out, it blew EVERYBODY away that was into punk and metal I knew and those I'd meet for years afterward.
What "Dark Angel's "Darkness Descends" was missing was Reign In Blood's immediately memorable, and catchy riffs, solos, choruses, and lyrics.
I voted for the debut though, since as I bought it first and still brings back good memories.
I played RIB to death, just like everybody, and made myself sick of hearing it after 2 years, so "South of Heaven" was welcomed by me. I did not need RIB Part II. |

If you are oblivious to the fact that over the last 10 years Reign in Blood has been hyped way beyond what's necessary, and that it's pretty much because of these metalcore/nu metal idiots, I don't know what to tell you. |
I hardly pay attention to what those fags say in interviews and I'll take your word for it. What I'm telling you is that RiB was considered the genre's manifesto by 'zines/fans back in 1988-89 already, whoever was there at the time can confirm that. |
I agree, Reign was considered a classic/benchmark album way back in the 80's.
I also remember Darkness Descends wasn't really given much attention, it was just another thrash album, that album or maybe the one after it was marketed as having over 200 riffs or something (personally I don't think DD is nessesarily more extreme than Reign, it's just got a heavier sound while Slayer had Andy Wallace mixing their albums to sound slightly cleaner.) |

I'd say that's accurate. _________________

...and the intensity and dynamic too. I dug 'Darkness Descends' as a kid but I never considered it on par at all with 'Reign in Blood' and I still don't. Great album but the level of focussed audio violence just doesn't compare. _________________

Darkness Descends also has a bit too murky sounds. Reign in Blood has all the clarity and punch. Burning of Sodom still rules...
Voted for Reign in Blood. Might be a bit of nostalgia for it as introduction to Slayer but it's one of those metal albums that I can listen at any time anywhere. _________________

Reign In Blood and then Show No Mercy. The songs on Hell Awaits are killer but the sound is very bad I think. Same for Haunting The Chapel. I used to like "Seasons In The Abyss" alot but now I think it's just ok and I only dig from Show No Mercy to Reign. South of Heaven from time to time. In their recent stuffs I can enjoy God Hates Us All sometimes. Their first track on Metal Massacre comp is legendary too, and it shows how they were influenced by Metallica, the beginning of the song is almost the same intro as Hit The Lights on the same comp series haha.
I noticed since 3 years or so, metalheads like to bash Reign In Blood... whatever |

Ok, guitars on "Hell Awaits" are a bit in the background, but the production on "Haunting the Chapel" is perfect. |

| Haunting and Hell Awaits sound similar to me. And yes the main problem is the guitar sound. Still they can be put in my all time fav metal list, but to be 100% honest they could've been better. I think the production of Show No Mercy aged better than the prod of Hell Awaits, despite it's an older release. |

| I voted "Hell Awaits." It sounds more "death metal" to me and I can't help feelings like Trey Azagthoth listened to Jeff Hanneman' solos very carefully before improving the recipe... |

For the record. Slayer is much, much better than Dark Angel. _________________
