Yeah, I've always wondered if other distros get pissed about NWN! selling their CDs for less than them! I think it's great, considering how cheap it is to press CDs.

Sometimest to print color covers cost much more. I dont know press-prices of CD's in USA, but in Poland if you want to press about 500-1000 copies it's cheap like a cdr

well this diehard thread is pretty cool, actually i dont like that them are selling so fast, then appears on egay etc.. etc... bt at other hand who can blame label for selling stuff(expecially i think that diehard idea is more or less cover printing expenses of release, and also collectors value) fast, or making some kind of special version... and if you have many customers/releases you cannot watch for every single copy... to be honest i consider mostly diehard as good pack to purchase, cause you get usually some cool bonuses, if some of those missed it is ok for me... but FUCK, there is always some releases that i desperately want to have on die hards...

Other labels do get mad at me for selling their CDs for $5. The reality is that I get maybe 2% of their total press and sell them for $5. that's like me doing free promotion of their releases at my expense. I don't want to jack up the cost of CDs to the point where I get stuck with them forever. I already have that problem with vinyl that sit around for years. Also, as someone else pointed out, CDs don't cost much to manufacture so it's hard to justify charging more than 100% profit margin.

How does it cost to manufacture a CD? Haven't CD's always been obscenely over priced?

$1.50 each or less with a simple fold over insert. Calculate in band copies and you're looking at around $2 each if you do a very simple release. Some good prices here: http://www.iloveimprint.com/jewel_folders.htm

There's recording costs, etc to consider too, when selling CDs and LPs.
That can add $1 - $5 per disc, depending on your intented limitation and the quality of the recording...

Recording costs are usually deducted as a business expense when doing taxes. If you're talking about expenses then you might as well also include gas, utilities, rent, etc. that adds up to be much more than recording costs. Also it's more reasonable to spread recording costs over several pressings. Most underground bands don't spend more than $3000 on recording and mastering anyway.

I think we're getting off topic here because most of these guys are talking about small runs of CDs and tapes that require no overhead except pressing cost and band copies.

Indeed, plus amazingly high taxes (I think Germany tops it all), other invoices (licenses, mastering, +++), tax accountant etc. It's a fatal error to see only 1 Euro manufactoring costs.
