Been revisiting Anthems of Sorrow yesterday, haven't played this one in a long time. Still dig it.
But I never took the time to check out their other releases. What about the rest of their albums? Anything good? Anything to avoid? How does the rest compare to Anthems of Sorrow?
I think the early material has more of a death metal sound to it... Don't have a clue about what came after AoS, I assume its fairly typical finnish black metal? |

Fairly typical Finnish black metal, indeed. However, I find that Diaboli's albums from "Kirous" onwards easily surpass their predecessors: what can be achieved with black metal this basic, this simplistic, this traditional (in the narrow sense of the word, i. e., strict adherence to specific principles of composition), these albums achieve; Diaboli certainly make deft use of the basic elements of black metal, even going back as far as Sodom's "In the Sign of Evil" in crafting their sound (without ever trying to appeal to any "retro" sentiments, by the way); and given the consistent quality of their albums, they're rather underrated (although, to be honest, I neither listen to their music very often nor do I particularly favour them as a band).
I recommend 2006's "The Antichrist" as a entry-point for latter-day Diaboli. |

Incredibly inventive and unique band unlike any other. Easily an all time favorite. Amazingly varied songwriting, with every track standing apart from the rest. Doesn't get boring at all, ever.

Well albums like Mezmerized by Darkness are pretty far from typical. _________________ Heavy Metal Nuts

...before they flush the whole song down the toilet with that last riff. But it's still my fave Diaboli. Call from the Stars!! Should get the new one, sounded more death metal á la Belial to me. _________________ Alone Wankyng |

Notice that I was referring to arck_angell inquiring about what to expect from the albums succeeding "Anthems of Sorrow". Also, I would disagree that "Mesmerized by Darkness" was primarily atypical of Finnish black metal in general, although it might very well be Diaboli's best work, even in comparison to the post-millennial albums. |
