Originality is the key. And for the record, that Goatwatchers united 7" is a disappointment to the goat family when it came out.

And here I was about to make a post to say "all bandnames with goat in them is good". Very Happy
With "goat" being the only exception, I do prefer original names over stereotypes. But I rather check out a band called Goatwitch Mountain or Demonic Angelrape than any "sentence bands" as people mentioned. The best bandnames (when it comes to metal) is the ones with only one word.
Slayer
Bathory
Venom
Dissection

And so on...

EDIT: Been drinking in the name of Jesus so my english probably sucks.

Definitive.

I really have a soft spot for good composita of two words, like Darkthrone, Graveland, Hellhammer etc. But in this case, German language is way more handy than English, because you mostly write "poetic" composita together (Wehrhammer, Blutorden, Eisregen, Totenmond etc.) - in opposite to Morbid Angel, Dark Funeral, Bestial Mockery, Cradle of Filth etc.

Edit: ARGHOSLENT is an absolute brilliant bandname, in every aspect.

Mein Kampf is the best band name.

I like it when the bandname gives a hint as to what to expect musically. i.e Truppensturm

I think when you choose a band name consisting of one word only (Venom, Possessed, Death, Emperor, Immortal) you really have to go for gold. Whereas a band name like Bohren & der Club of Gore, Dirty Rotten Imbeciles or Acid Mothers Temple is more like: o.k. I'm hanging out with some buddies for fun.

I think it's even worse and unimaginative when it is taken from a direct influence band. Thrash band with name like Bonded By Blood = I never even want to hear it.

This x1000

I think bandnames are pretty important as well. For me, the band name is a first impression. If it is a shit name just thrown out there than I will think the rest of the music is that way as well. Someone else put it right: all the great bands have good names that have some sort of connection to the music.

Is this band, Vargaroth any good?
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Vargaroth/109460

Probably the most ridiculous name I've ever seen.

But being anno vulgaris 2012, pretty much every single-word that is remotely ominous, evil, etc sounding has been used. There are 88,109 bands on Metal Archives - I think all the good single-word plain english names will have been used by now.

Well, how good do you honestly expect it to be? I'm more than sure that you know exactly how they sound, even without hearing a single note they recorded.

"Instrumental demo.

Tape 30 handnumbered copies.
CD-R 20 handnumbered copies."
