I start this thread cause I'm against the theory about 'Welcome to hell' and 'Black Metal' are to be considered black metal and have given the names and origins of the genre. What an overrated band!
For me it's not true, and the origins are to be found in Scandinavia in the early nineties with Mayhem and Darkthrone who start the first real black metal movement influenced by Bathory.
I am the only one (stupid) who think this?

If I understand correctly, you dislike Venom, and therefor do not believe they had an album named "Black Metal"? _________________ "...that magnificent deer has vanished." |

Venom, Hellhammer, Bathory, Sarcofago, The Residents, Einstürzende Neubauten, Tangerine Dream & Kraftwerk invented Black Metal. Everybody knows. _________________ What beats global warming? nuclear winter |

Amazing punk band for sure. You could say that in comparison to other heavy sounding bands of those times (same goes for Motorhead). _________________ Sic transit gloria mundi |

Both bands were important for Mayhem, Maniac even has a Neubauten tattoo.
And I can't find a direct quote, but this will do:
"Also interesting to note, this time from a musical standpoint, something that isn't mentioned in Moynihan's book but recently became more apparent from the many interviews compiled for the Vomit discography and the Vinyl reissue of DMDS: Just how obsessed and reverential the Norwegians (and in particular, Euronymous) were of American avante-garde group The Residents. Fuck all this revisionism.
Of course, Venom were the first BM band and invented music, imagery and all the rest belonging to it. I am not even discussing this.
But there's always this minority that pretends otherwise, because they are simply TOO GAY for Venom.

Mayhem, Darkthrone, Burzum, Satyricon, Emperor have codified the genre. Nobody sounded like them before, especially Venom.
Once again, what an overrated band! |

Mayhem was mainly influenced by Venom, Darkthrone was mainly influenced by Mayhem (plus Bathory, HH/CF and Tormentor). If you need an inventor of the "Nordic BM", then it is Thorns and Mayhem.
Satyricon and Emperor are Johnny-come-latelys and have "codified" absolutely nothing.
This whole "out of Norway" theory is pure crap. There was Samael, Tormentor, Rotting Christ, Blasphemy etc. pp.
Black Metal in its very beginning was about having AN OWN MUSICAL style, be it first or second wave. Nothing codified here. |
