Literary genius of the XXth century.
And Michel Houellebecq for his visionary and acid view on the misery of the Western Man. It is, however, filled with so many typically French references that foreign readers would miss many tasty bits. Unless ones very familiar with French contemporary culture.
Let's mention the philosophers Kirkegaard and PASCAL now shall we? |
I'm curious about that statement. I discovered Houellebecq through his H.P Lovecraft: against the world, against life (which definitely qualifies for this discussion). I cant say that I found anything massively jarring or inexplicable in Atomized, but perhaps my (otherwise fairly redundant) undergrad degree in continental philosophy is sufficient to grant that level of familiarity with the writers he refers to (Derrida, Lacan, foucault etc) and the post 68 trends in French thought?
Speaking of French writing, The Kindly Ones/Les Bienveillantes is a good look into nihilism. I say French even though Littell is American - it was writen and published in French so I think it qualifies. |

If you're looking for someone to make a worthwhile academic argument for being misanthropic you're going to be looking for a long time. Most philosophers/academics/logicians tend to err on the side of cautioning against such a worldview w/ the anchor that a true abhorrence of mankind advances neither the individual nor the society, culture, group, etc...
That said, Notes from Underground Seriously though it sounds like you're looking for something like Dostoyevsky. |

I recently finished La Bas, and I'd say it radiates misanthropy. Very good read. _________________

Well you don't have to be a misanthrope to make an argument for being misanthropic. I assumed that by more academic you meant an evaluation of the topic in a scholarly sense, which, in my opinion, is most effectively analyzed from a psychological perspective. |

That doesn't have much to do with the thread, but those are some great comics.

Have there been many psychological studies? That's probably more what I'm interested in. |

I think it radiates the lust for life (& death). Mandatory read (both)! Fin de Siecle literature is pretty misanthropic in general...modernity's first collapse.
Arthur Rimbaud saw the decline pretty early as well.
This one wrote some pretty misanthropic stuff (but it's rather literary philosophy than genuine poetic literature):
