I tried to copy the guitar sound with SHRINE....
Using a HM2 and everyhing....
But in the end it did not turn out like that.
Especially since the music is different in the first place...

This VOHLAN track posted is really the closest sounding piece of music
to Nattens Madrigal I ever heard... and Iīm looking for anything like
that since ages...

I always assumed the distortion on that was a combination of a Metal Zone (because of how sharp it is) and an overloaded mixing board.

To me it sounds more like a HM2. But of course thatīs just my assumption, donīt know for sure.... And yes, the mixing is over the top as well....

I believe the truth of the matter is they recorded the guitars plugged into pine trees, which creates a beautifully natural/terrestrial distortion sound. One of the many benefits of recording in the forest (or on an 8-track in someone's living room... Cool )

Thanks for the suggestion guys!

What do you think about demo 'Vargnatt'? Sounding similar to Nattens?

They are both beautiful and harsh.

Sounds straight into the (overloaded) mixing board with a Metal Zone to me, with post-production after the fact. I'd actually bet money on it. A small amount, but money nevertheless. Laughing

Come on, closest sound to Nattens Madrigal is Borknagar's first opus.
Awesome album too, and quite underrated!

Great album, and I can see some similarities I guess, but I don't think it's really that close. Closest has to be the first Volahn album.

Absolutely. That's very different but there is some .... magick and also ....Garm, one ofthe bast black metal singer of all time, at least to me.

I'd say that "Liberation" by 1349 is *nearly* as obscure as "Nattens Madrigal".

Underrated? From what I remember, this album spawned myriads of Viking/Folk BM clones in the late 90ies.

Still a good album. Probably one of the last really original ones from Norway.

Similar yes, but the shitty neoclassical interludes totally take the punch out of the album's fantastic BM tracks.

In any case, I find this to be a whole hell of a lot closer than the Volahn album. Honestly, I can barely hear the similarity with that and Nattens, and it never even occurred to me to compare the two. I like the Volahn album but its really lacks the grit, punch and direct writing approach taken on Nattens.

The production is really similar and he uses the same style of riffs. I really think if you had Garm doing vocals on that, it'd pass as an Ulver recording.

Totally agree on the Borknagar thing by the way. I forgot how shit those crappy keyboard bits were. Such a cheap sound.

Am I to assume that Volahn LP is hard to find now?

fair enough, there are a lot of riffs in a Nattens style on the album, but the atmosphere is so different because Volahn uses space a lot more. A track like Trance Ceremonial is in no way even remotely similar. Also, the Volahn is not even 1/100th as sharp or suffocating as Nattens, and that, to me, is what really defines that Ulver album.

Does anyone know how many guitar tracks were used on Nattens?
