Today I was digging through an ancient pile of records given to me by a friend when I uncovered this :

It has an embossed leather cover, and was released by Capitol Records at the end of the 1940s. But the weird thing about it is that the 12" records are cut on metal slabs (at 78 RPM) instead of vinyl or shellac and the sound is very noisy. Never seen anything like it, actually.

A friend of mine put out a 7" that was metal. It kinda looks like it's made of copper or something. I don't remember it sounding very good. The record itself was pretty flexible and had a lot of hills and valleys. This made it sound a bit warped.

Those look like regular old 78s to me, are you sure they're actually metal? The old vinyl was a lot more like glass... it clinks when you tap on it.

I thought about it as well. It surely would destroy any needle in a jiff, unless it's a diamond needle...

I actually have an old Victrola that I inherited and it has a metal needle to play these old 78s, they look like nails. They do actually destroy the records, that's why those old 78's sound like noise attacks.

That Oskar Straus -box looks very much Die Hard, but it's a 78 rpm gramophone record made of shellac, not metal.

Yeah, it's shellac. However, these records are harder and more metal-like than most shellac discs I've owned though the sound is still just as shitty.
