Most of the essential bands and releases have already been listed here...though no one has mentioned Kill em All, Killing Is My Business... or Seven Churches. ...

I'll add the first Potential Threat demo from 1988...killer high-energy Bay Area thrash.

The Eastern Front Live At Ruthie's Inn compilation is a nice document of the early Bay Area scene.

I didn't grow up here so I don't have nostalgia clouding my judgement. I think only these bands passes the test of time.

Possessed (death metal I know)
Exodus
Metallica old
Black Dethe

I can't listen to the other stuff that sounds like crossover thrash or power metal thrash.
