I was there about 4 years ago, and I picked up a map of all the independent stores in Portland from some store there. There is something like 30 stores in the city... amazing! The best one I went to was on 2nd St... may have been called 2nd St Records or something like that. There were a few cool ones for sure. I think that map should be locatable in a few of those stores.

There are plenty of record shops here. The aforementioned 2nd Avenue Records is a good starting place, right downtown. Good selection of metal, punk/hardcore too. Jackpot has two stores, one on Burnside downtown and one on SE Hawthorne. Mainly indie rock, but has an okay metal selection. Anthem on SE 34th and Belmont has some good stuff. Everyday Music (one downtown, one on NE Sandy, one in Beaverton) has a lot of random cheap stuff, they get picked over pretty quickly though. Discourage on SE Morrison has a lot of collectible punk and metal stuff, it can be a bit pricey though. Brickwall on NE MLK specializes in punk and hardcore too. Exiled has a big experimental section. There are others around too, but those are my favorites. Basically, if you go down Hawthorne, you'll run into a bunch. Hope that helps.

And yes, that map is still around, and updated annually.

I moved to Oregon 4 years ago from the bay area, every time I am in PDX I try to go to a record shop or 2 to at least look. But I find almost no metal worth buying, not even duplicates to trade. I do every now and then see an interesting new metal release but nothing to get really excited about. 2nd Avenue records has a lot of metal cds but I never found anything truly rare there. They stock very little in the way of new underground vinyl but I do see some few NWN! releases there, but I have not been back to this shop since last fall.

anyway there are tons of little shops and it might be fun digging, but honestly if you are going to be in Portland I would suggest you focus on drinking microbrews in all the little (and bigger) brewpubs around. The selection of beers around is far better than any metal you might hope to find. Drive down to San Francisco if you want to find more metal.

so good luck, you are going to need it.

Lino,

Call me if you decide to come down. We have a guest room in the new house.
