Why would any band or label prefer to use Soundcloud rather than Bandcamp?

I already have a Bandcamp page for my label's releases. It's 100% free as I don't sell anything on there. There's also no limit on how much stuff I can upload.

I was going to create a Soundcloud page just to see what it's like, then I saw I'd need to pay an annual fee if I need more than 120 'upload minutes' per year.

From what I read, 'upload minutes' is the time spent uploading audio files to the site. 120 minutes seems a bit low for uploading high quality wav files. I reckon I could only upload 4 or 5 wav files of a decent length in that time limit. Not much for a whole year.

Also, you can't change the look of a Soundcloud page much - at least I've never seen one that looks different to the standard design. Bandcamp provides basic options to change the header image, the background, and text colours. Just enough to make something look recognisable and 'official', and to prevent any shitty hacked layout coding that used to infest myspace.

Soundcloud has a 'friends' system and allows people to add comments - but aren't those the type of things artists and labels hated about myspace?

Both sites are advert-free, and have audio players that can be embedded in other web pages.

Seems to me that the only two slightly useful things Soundcloud has that Bandcamp hasn't are the visible waveform of each song and a volume control. Or am I missing something?

I agree. I only ever use Soundcloud to share preview tracks or single songs, then I use Bandcamp as my actual website.

Soundcloud is really just a faster way of sharing bigger audio snippets. If you want it to look official, and have completed stuff you want to display, bandcamp is for you. Short musical ideas, etc, soundcloud.

bandcamp is better imo, I can sell my demos of all that electronic stuff I've done.

bandcamp is good, some web zines prefer embedding samples on their sites from soundcloud though...

How does that work on Soundcloud? Can you invite people to listen to a track that isn't publicly available?

Embedding a Bandcamp player is surely just as easy? It has the same shortcuts for adding a player to blog pages, facebook pages, etc.

I have a few tracks of my releases on my site for a quick listen, that works fine via Soundcloud I think: http://www.new-era-productions.nl

This is all that matters to me.
