Throughout the years:
Darkthrone -A blaze original lp $5
Emperor - s/t original mlp $4
Mercyful fate - mlp, Curse of the pharaohs and From the depths of hell lps lot for $30
and tons more, these are just the first ones off the top of my head. Back in 1995 some friend of mine had stumbled across an original posercorpse deathcrush + dsp reissue lps at some local vinyl convention, selling for $8 and $15 respectively. He had no idea 'what this Mayhem band was all about', thought they were too expensive and didn't buy the records  |

My cheapest finds are the following:
Mercyful Fate - Nuns Have No Fun second pressing MLP - 10$
Sleep Vol 2. EP - 5$
That's pretty much it, really. I did have two ridiculously amazing trades though:
Lips - Hard 'n'Heavy in exchange for The Rods - S/T
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales PD (original) in exchange for the CD |

For the past month and this month, I've got the following goods on LP (yes, fucking gramophone records):
Burzum - Hvis lyset tar oss and Det som engang var ($42 each, original Misanthropy presses)
Nifelheim - selt-titled and Devil's Force ($20 each)
Beherit - Messe des Morts ($12)
Hellbastard - Heading for Internal Darkness ($20)
Impaled Nazarene - Ugra-Karma (with original cover ($20)
Destroyer 666 - Violence is the Prince of the World ($20)
I'd say it's not that bad considering how much I have to buy today from eBay or traders.... |

In 1999 or 2000, I found an original DSP pressing of Sigh 'Scorn Defeat' in a used record store for $5.00.
After I paid, I aksed the guy "do you know what this is"?
He replied - "I think it's heavy metal, but not really sure..." |

I spent 2 hours today digging through record bins and turning up only shit, and I realized I've never scored 1 decent find this way, but I have continued to do it for 18 years.
How many fucking Sing Along With Mitch and Jesus Christ Superstars (the most common records I see at thrift stores/used book shops) do I need to dig through before I stop chasing the dragon??
Location may have something to do with it, but big city = more record hunters and more savvy shop owners, so maybe not... |

It's mostly about pure chance, a fluke. When I listed the goods that I got, it all came from the same person. The Internet is a useful tool to search for people who are willing to part their music collection and such but that's finding a needle in a haystack. City-wise, it's also a good place to find rare stuff, too, but there are record stores out there who aren't afraid of jacking up the prices on rare stuff. Metropolitan areas are your best bet to look for rare music if you're not willing to use the Internet to search for music. |

Ya Madison isn't the biggest city but I hunt Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and used to live in Oakland and I've still never turned up something real rare for under $10. I've gotten some "better than ebay" prices but usually when I find cool stuff, it's at a specialty shop where they know what stuff is worth.
There is a decent metal store here in town actually, where I find cool stuff. But I keep chasing that once in a lifetime "some guy just committed suicide and his parents took his record collection to Goodwill" (this actually happens more often than you'd think)...
I actually have dreams about that. Often.... |

About 6 years ago I paid this guy $5 a pop for Mutilator "Immortal Force", Vulcano "Bloody Vengeance", Holocausto "Campo de Extermínio" and "Blocked Minds", the first two "Warfare Noise" comps (with the first one signed by various members of three of the bands, Attomica "s/t", Sodom "Expurse of Sodomy" picture disk and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember right now. Plus $20 for the Sepultura/Overdose split LP. He also offered me an original Mayhem "Deathcrush" for like $40 but I was too much of a fucking fool to bite.  |
