Some of that shit is pretty cliché and corny.

When it comes to art like this, Moyen is the king.

Ketola is the best today, without a doubt. I also like what E. of Watain does a lot.

I'd like to see more artists like Joe Petagno these days. Tomas Holm is fucking great too. The fact he doesn't work with every band who requests him is good too.

Either I don't get your point or it sounds a bit odd to label these drawings "pretty cliché and corny", and I guess you connoted it negatively, but speaking of Moyen as "the king". He is the king of clichéd and corny cover art indeed, that doesn't make his drawings more multifarious anyway.

Really love Moyen's classicks, but today's stuff seems watered down to me due to the unremitting repetition of certain elements and characters. Sometimes it feels a bit like "He came up with that before, didn't he? Must be the very same cover scene just from a different angle."

Yeah, Ketoladog rules the night! Davthvs is a visual compendium of all that's Death Metal at its very twisted beast! And speaking of mind-exploring artists I'd like to mention Manuel Tinnemans as well. That guy is amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing!

Yes it doesn't make his work more multifarious, but it is better than most of the stuff you see these days that "borrow" so much from him.

In recent years he has become repetitive for sure, but I'm pretty sure that's largely due to those who commission him for work. Also, using his art has almost become a standard for many. I'm almost tempted to call him a scene artist, but that's not his fault for being a good at what he does! Maybe guilty of being too prolific and not picky enough.

His art has improved though out the years without a doubt. Just look at what he's done recently for Archgoat! The newer stuff has great composition.

Timo is almost faceless in the art world, for the reason he doesn't stick to one "style". What all his art has in common though is that it reeks of morbidity an darkness. One cannot tell that the art inside "Reinkaos" and the covers of "Salvation" and "Graves of the Archangels" were done by the same person by looking at them.

Several artists worthy of mention include Desmond Sia (Malaysia - did for Impiety's earlier works), Daniel Desecrator (new Suicidal Winds) and the guy who did for Engorged (the death band)..

The Engorged cover was done by...Dennis Dread? He's great artist for sure. The fact he does everything with just a ballpoint pen is really unbelievable.

Another great artist today is somebody otherwise not involved in Metal at all (althought Martin Ain own one of his pieces).

I worked in a gallery that displayed his stuff. Really amazing sculptures..

Kris Kuski http://www.kuksi.com/

Pictures can never do his work justice, they have to be seen in person.

Hej D.,

Thanks for your reply and basically there's nothing more to add about Moyen and the reception of his drawings. And hell, horns up to you for the link to Kuski's site. His art is truly frightening, a quality I miss badly nowadays. Maybe it's kind of enthusiastic, but Kuski's richness of details is simply stunning at the first glance and reminds of e. g. Brueghel.

You know these sites most probably, but just check

Morbid Anatomy
Visual Media

for more grotesque art.

I would say grotesque is an understatement...seriously all the other satan/devil/goat art pales in comparison to Kuksi's in terms of eliciting the foreboding fear when witnessing the artwork..

And yes, Dennis Dread's the man who did the Engorged artwork - Brilliant!

When it comes to dark underground artists I prefer Necrolord, Kris Verwimp, Chris Moyen, Pentagno and H.R Gigger! All contributed great artworks (painting) for the covers!

I really dislike the photoshop artworks...
