Word. Great flick.

Blood and Thunder - sounds like you could use some of the submissions for the "Stench" book anyway, so it works out.

The 'second wave' bands worshipped the early albums of the already mentioned bands and consider the later albums to be sell-outs because of the clear production, etc., etc. And look what happened to those 'second wave' bands, they followed the same path as their idols. The more albums they sold and earned more money their sound became more commercial with each album. Very few bands remained "true" to their roots.

This is really an important summary.

In my mind, it describes all genres that are vaguely "underground" from punk onward.

In such genres, there is such a thing in authenticity. In rock, there isn't -- you're an entertainer, not an artist or sage of any kind.

But in metal, we expect heavy, both musical and content-wise (more honest ages might have said "profundity" here).

The authentic bands self-destruct and are absorbed by the inauthentic because being inauthentic is an easier road. And we have metal bands who embrace the mix of irony, self-deprecating humor, and mockery of the genre that make it easy to be inauthentic: Cannibal Corpse, Nargaroth, etc.

Also look at some of the Thrash Metal bands that destroyed themselves by becoming more accessible to the general public - a.k.a. changing their musical style for the $$$ sign. Metal Church and Onslaught are the best examples. Metallica being the obvious failure in this genere. Every genere has their share of losers.

True.

You can't imagine Them Crooked Vultures selling out though. Where is there to sell out to?

Or Britney Spears. How to sell out insincere sugar pop any more?

I guess some of the post-punk and pop-punk also qualified as a big sell-out, but I'll leave that to those who know the genre.

There are those who succeded though. Anthrax being one of them

There are those who succeded though. Anthrax being one of them. I still don't know why it worked for them as their "commercial" albums suck ass. I imagine they had lots of support from their label and money was put into advertising them. Although it could've been due to S.O.D.'s huge success which automatically drew people to the members' other bands.

Good things.

They got distribution for it through Variance films, so now they have the money to bring it to theatres.

It's playing in my city starting this month.

...has good updates.

They're still releasing it across the world in varying theater distributions. Keep in mind, these are not people with a ton of money and a DVD will happen once all these theater showings are done.

Is this just another documentary talking primarily about Varg and Norway to flaunt how 'evil' black metal is? It doesn't sound too appealing to me, I can just picture the room filled with zit-faced teens, hipsters, and other fake people. I don't even understand why people see Burzum and the Norwegian BM scene as evil either. What, a handful of murders? Don't gangsters do this stuff EVERYDAY yet no one thinks of them as evil?

No.

It comes at it from a leftist theoretical position and tries to figure out what motivated them and what their theory is.

There's no glam.

I think I've got the concept for the book tightened up now, and I'm ready to start chasing, and importantly, receiving submissions from people.

Here's the contribution criteria: http://www.blackmetalrevolution.com/contribute.html and if you're just plain interested in reading more, get started at www.blackmetalrevolution.com

It makes sense why this musical genre is populated by so many angsty, self loathing, confused, morons.

Wow, a bunch of moronic, mongoloid, retards whining about tragic decline of black metal "since *insert mid-nineties date* on the internet, I've never seen that before.

It is always funny to see people whining about this GENRE of music as if it was SO great at one point. What does it all mean!? What does it all stand for??! EXISTENTIAL HUMAN CRISIS!

Hahaha, I find it funny Conservationist attempted to make it sound like Black Metal has ties to Romanticist Sturm und Drang type artistic movements when hardly anyone even understands let alone cares what this music is about beyond simple entertainment; which sounds like a perception often shared by the Baby Boomer generation, along with all the behavior consisting of whining, the sense of entitlement, materialism, excessive free time to waste on worthless activities like the internet and self worship, it seems like most who follow black metal in any sense of the word are the antithesis to anything of artistic merit or value. Nothing more then byproducts of the modern, instant gratification, me-me-me zeitgeist. It is really no surprise that to most people Black Metal is nothing more then a just another underground musical genre with a lot of posturing and theatrics. And lets face it, that is all most people involved in Black Metal are interested in, thus that is why it is always emulated while music/aesthetics are usually irrelevant although most people won't admit it.

But go back to debating how "worthless" everything is and how important your opinions are while you still listen to this "dead" genre. If you look beneath the surface, like with most matters, it isn't very hard to see what truly lies beyond.

This.

I hate it when people listen to music, but refuse to identify with the concept behind it and decide to approach it at a very superficial level; as 'entertainment'. Black Metal isn't a fucking board game; it's an artform which arguably hasn't even come close to realising a fraction of its full potential. I have no time for music tourists.

Black Metal isn't dead. There are new releases and bands that emerge every year which confirm this. Even Beherit and The Black are living proof that this genre is alive in Anno MMIX.

The worst thing about Black Metal is its fans, anyone who attends live events regularly will know exactly what i mean.

I've been invited to post a blog at the Metal Maniacs site about the book. The first is essentially an intro for those unfamiliar with what I am doing, and if that's you, read on:
