nah, I usually dont. not anymore at least. you can, just gotta re-adjust your weight. counterbalance. depending on what kind of turntable you have.
the blasphemy mat is thin and abit rough. I have it on display on my "wall of fame", ha,ha,ha....!
the venom is super thick and soft. purchased years back from sweden.
hails adrian!

To the OP:

Direct-drive tables with metal platters are generally better off with a heavy/dense mat. They dampen the platter to help reduce background noise. Did your 1200 come with the heavy 1/4" rubber mat, or the thinner 1/8" mat? If it has the thin mat, you might want to try the thicker one. i replaced the flimsy rubber mat on my direct-drive JVC table with a 1/4" Technics mat, it made a difference. i also put a thin sheet of cork on top of the mat. A lot cheaper than $100. Those Achromats are supposed to be pretty good, but are probably only worth it you already have a fairly high-end system and cartridge.

You can find the heavy Technics mats here, along with TONS of other parts and mods for 1200s: http://www.kabusa.com/m1200.htm

I have the stock felt and rubber mats. Rubber will dampen better than the felt mats but doesn't look as cool as, say, doomchild's Venom mat!

i suggest picking up one of the anti-static felt mats i posted way above. but in the end it really doesnt matter if youre just playing records.
