I noticed to my great suprise that this war metal forum doesn't have a thread about Anathema. Huh! No need to weep anymore, here it is.
What a great band! At least up to Eternity, after that they lost it IMO. Although I have to admit that I've never heard the latest albums, the story of my life...
Serenades, The Silent Enigma & especially Eternity are outstanding relases.
Restless Oblivion is one of the best opening tracks ever.
What's the first demo like? The EPs & 2nd demo are killer too.
Still to this date I've never heard the We Are the Bible tracks. I've decided to wait until I find the EP in physical format. Am I missing a lot? I read that they are pretty improvised.
Did they release anything under the Pagan Angel name?
Was Eternity ever released on vinyl? What about Pentecost III?
Alternative 4 is the last album I've heard. What's a album to start with when it comes to their later material?
Did anyone see them live in the 90s when they were not opening for HIM?

Pagan Angel Demo is brilliant, it has mighty sound and arrangements are great, grab it 100% once You have a chance.

Not sure, if it circulated under first bandname but it's basically "An Illiad of Woes" I'm talking about here.

I thought Eternity was great and Alternative IV was crap. Judgement is better than most albums by any band. So good that even at the time it was clear they would never do it again.

I saw them live around 2001 and they were very good.

Eternity came out on vinyl, yes.

Maybe it's cliche, but I can really only listen to Serenades and Crestfallen. Both classics that I still listen to. Maybe Pentecost III, but after that, forget it.

great band indeed. I like all their albums. cds are very cheap to find I remember buying judgment at auchan for 6 euros so you can start from it and get all albums.
the first demo is standard death metal release: fast songs with slow/doom parts
we are the bible is not essential for the songs but very nice item to have in a collection
I got eternity vinyl but pentecost III was never released on lp

never seen them live Sad
I'd kill for an early anathema shirt, the one with "falling deeper" front and "into fear" on back

Anathema are a great band. I've only got The Silent Enigma through Alternative 4, all of which I enjoy. the song "A Dying Wish" is excellent.

I think Eternity and Judgement are awesome. Alternative 4 is also good, others I don't care that much. I'm missing Judgement on vinyl, Eternity was quite hard to find on vinyl.

I have They Die 7" for trade in case someone's looking for it.

They're on the digipack reissue of Serenades (the only Anathema I own at this point, though I have the track "Fragile Dreams" on a Peaceville promo compilation and think it's really great), so you can get them easily and cheaply there unless you hate CDs, digipacks, reissues, remasters, etc. Personally, though, I don't think they're particularly good songs. I don't think the album itself is very strong, either. Doesn't match up to early stuff by My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost.

Great band- even though they are totally different nowadays I still enjoy them live (haven't heard the last couple of albums). Geniune, honest, no bullshit guys too. Saw them last year with Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride.

I absolutely love the Silent Eningma- I got given it when it came out and was blown away. Still gets played a lot here.

I saw them a few times in the mid/late-90's (usually supporting Cathedral).

One of my favourite bands, love everything they've done except for Eternity and Hindsight (which is a bit redundant).

Pentecost III is my favourite by a long shot, one of the few "Perfect Albums" in my opinion.

Demos are great, sort of got an improvised feel (Memento Mori, last track on Pentecost III is originally from one of the demos).

Judgement and Natural Disaster are the best of the new stuff in my opinion, not metal at all but good moody atmospheric rock.

Based on this tread I've been revisiting later Anathema via Youtube, and man, I threw this shit out the window when I was much younger, but I find that I really like it now, especially the songs I heard from Judgment. It reminds me of a Pink Floyd-ish/Radiohead post-rock with Pornography-era The Cure emphasis on repeating melodic passages. I know, I'm gay. Razz

I'm with ADB on this one,I think Pentecaust III is an essential release. the fact that it was one of the first heavy albums I bought probably helps . I didnt get any releases from further in their career, and only know their newer stuff from what I hear in the car on the way to rehersal.

me.Favourite song must be Restless Oblivion.

Yeah I agree they are an epic band. Fine Day and Natural Disaster are great albums too I think. Some of the peripheral junk at the end - secret tracks and the like I could deal wtihout, but the songcraft and atmosphere presented is excellent!
