TMC is of course a much better album in terms of the riffs. It's also a rare example of something completely original. Varathron's debut was great as well, but it is clearly an attempt to keep up with the rest of the local. TMC by a fair bit.

Once interesting thing about His majesty - the dude who was the main songwriter on the album has gone on to produce perfectly competent but yet completely unremarkable material in his other bands, Wampyrinacht being a possible exception.

Who was that? As far as I know Vorskaath of Zemial played guitars on His Majesty, though I don’t know he was the composer as well or someone else.

Both are absolutely amazing. Really can't make a choice. It's TMC one day and HMATS the next.

Both are great, but Thy Mighty Contract has a much more important role in my interest in black metal, so it gets the nod.

Both albums are legendary but for me no competition - "Thy Mighty Contract" forever.

I need to revisit Varathron, they never really clicked with me before in the past...

Not going to choose as I love both albums, but His Majesty at the Swamp is especially important to me as I discovered it before Rotting Christ, but TMC is just as important and equal in quality.

Tough choice alright but went for TMC in the end, a definitive and marginally more cohesive slab of Hellenic glory.

TMC absolutely. One of my top metal albums.

Although it's certainly a weird one. The artwork, and lyrics is completely at odds with the music itself. It doesn't really inspire any dark feelings in me. It feels more like a mystic journey fit for a nice sunny day.

I remember Sakis saying they were pretty much stoned the whole time writing this album, which makes a lot of sense imo.

Also probably my favourite use of pinch harmonics in metal. And speaking of riffs.. not technically a TMC song but Visions Of The Dead Lovers is a great track.

Euronymous, Nergal, Blasphemer, Ivar, R. Forster and Alexandros (The One) commenting on this album:

And Macabre Oma the worst; he only calls Passage to Arcturo cannibalistic cause of that weird jungle interlude.
