...and now you love them.

As for me:

IMPETIGO and MACABRE: not your average DM bands, they were too fucking sick and weird. Now I LOVE them for that reason.

ILDJARN: first time I listened to him at friend's house I said "what the hell is this crap???". Got it many years later. Total hatred.

KING DIAMOND: it was the Conspiracy album. Too theatrical and that falsetto was too much for a teenager into Sodom and Deicide. I started to worship the King later...

MAYHEM: DMDS. The very first "2nd wave BM" album I listened to at the age of 16. Now I rate it in my top3.

CELTIC FROST: my first attempt with the band was with Into The Pandemonium. Again it was too much experimental and avantgardish for a teenager me. Started to love the band listening to Morbid Tales later.

Literally all of Extreme Metal as a whole, it took years for me to start liking harsh vocals.

Voivod. Killing Technology was one of the first LPs I ever got and while I always fuckin loved the artwork the strange music didn't do much for my soft baby ears back then. Several years later I got into the bit more straightforward War & Pain and Rrröööaaarrr and tried with KT again & it clicked hard, now it's my favorite Voivod album.

Bathory -- Twilight Of The Gods.

It was my first Bathory and i had gotten this when it was released.
I'd read and already knew that's an old classic band in extreme metal. Very important for DM/BM. blabla
So my surprise was big what i was listened there.

I returned to TOTG after i got all the previous works.
Hammerheart is still the better of these two.

Mercyful Fate sounded way to corny and 80s for me when I heard them as a young lad listening to too much mainstream 90s metal. It was actually hearing the song on the Probot album with King Diamond singing that made me buy Melissa and Don't Break the Oath and now I fucking love everything about MF. Conspiracy is a masterpiece but I haven't delved too much into his solo stuff for some reason.

Same here...

One of my first encounters with Death Metal was Cannibal Corpse "Tomb Of The Mutilated" in 1992. Found it ridiculous at first listen. One year later I was on a total Death Metal / Grindcore trip.

Celtic Frost is another example of a band I started to listen to quite early simply because my guitar teacher handed me over an original pressing of "To Mega Therion" as a present when I was 14 because he hated that band and bought the LP just for the cover. I thought CF to be ok right from the beginning, but this band grew on me over the years and I started to appreciate them more and more until I worshipped that sound.

But I relate these changes in taste to age and a still developing music taste back in my early teenage years.

Back in 1986, I bought the first two "Speed Kills" compilation albums by "music for nations" with almost all of the major players of Thrash (black, speed, death) Metal of the era, and there was "Possessed" by Bathory, and I didn't liked that song !!!
In my mind back then, was a very crude attempt at playing like Venom - only being more fast, extreme etc.

It wasn't until I listened to Revenge at the gym I started actually liking them.

Mgla. Heard Groza when it was released and didn't like it all. Fast forward 10 years, I'm a huge fan of the band.

The only band that come to my mind is Peste Noire. Back in the time I was much more against eclecticism, against mixing different things and experiments in black metal, and never give a fuck about PN while many of my local BM friends loved this band. Later I enjoyed a lot all that things in PN that earlier pisses me off. And now seems I'm again not interested in listening to new album of PN, tracksuit is too much for me. I know, this story sounds like a stupid romance.

I hated Inquisition because of the vocals the first few times I heard them. I revisited a couple years later and something clicked.

AMEBIX

...Yes. I heard Arise! the same day I heard Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing and Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, the latter two clicked right away, but I had no idea what to make of the Amebix album.
I think I was 12 or maybe 13 then, and by the age of 15 it hit me like a fucking truck. Got Monolith, went back to the Spiderleg era and finally got the Axegrinder album after few months.

My favourite band.
