In truth it hasn't been easy to get people to contribute, but I wonder whether the apparent simplicity of this project is overwhelmed by the complexity of what I am actually trying to get at.

People are afraid to belong to an ideology, so they prefer it to be vague. I'd ask some of the more articulate people who ARE NOT sold out to industry in various forms. I think it's a cool project.

I had the Osmose promo version of Battles (received it just prior to release) and also heard the released CD and own the LP version. The audio on the promo and the album are exactly the same. Only the cover of the advance was different and as someone mentioned there were some adverts wtih this image.

so are you saying you think the "alternative mix" dosent exist?

If an alternate mix exists it was not released on that promo CD.

I recall a time when there were people adding the "original speed" recordings of 'Pure Holocaust" and "Battles" to their tape trading lists saying that both albums were sped up by 10%. Someone had slowed it down on a 4 track or soemthing like that. "Frost" by Enslaved was also bound by this accusation. To be clear it wasn't the band or label releasing these, someone slowed these recordings down themselves on a 4 track a started trading them.

That is true, but also it's rare that ideologies match up 100% except in cases of imitation.

To make my position clear, I was in fact hoping to achieve a collective of divergent expression. Black metal's core value has been a number of things it seems over the years and I hope to capture much of that. Submissions so far have intimated this concept to some extent but I should see a greater variance as time rolls on.

The story was as simple as the band liked the blue images, but closer to release Herve pushed them towards the white cover that was issued officially - Abbath and Demonaz in the snow. The photos were taken by Abbath's father. They drove 3 hours north of Bergen, would take photos for 5 minutes and then back in the car to warm up and so on...

Amazing to think that that record is 14 years old. I think it sounds as killer and chaotic as it did back then. What came after, well that's another story, but the first three LPs are ripsnorters!

You interviewed Immortal in the Heresy zine back then? I remember that the answers were much longer than what he usually bothered to type.
Edit: That Vondur interview was a hilarious one.

ha ha, yes I definitely had a knack for interviews it seems. And yeah Vondur was a classic. I would have been surprised to find IT so funny had I never heard Vondur, but it all seemed to make sense after that.

I'm actually trying to put a book together on the philosophy of Black Metal at the moment. Take a look at www.thestenchofblackmetal.com

Good luck. Keep us informed. Maybe you might be interested in this article:

Interesting project.
Has it been easy/hard to get worthwhile contributions? What's the ratio of invitations vs. participations? Some artists who you really would like to participate?
I guess schedules in work like that are no good? That's my round-about way of asking any idea when it might come out heh?
Too bad Ike Vil/Babylon Whores wrote his masters thesis (about devil, worshipping & rock music) in Finnish. I think that might have been interesting for you to read.
Here's a link to Finnish users on the forum in case someone is interested in reading that:

For many of us, your words on another thread made me interested as well, but if Kuolema is all one can say, no chance. Damn it.

Well, we should rather continue this one in a seperate thread since it has little to do with the Immortal mix.

Yeah it was kinda obnoxious to divert the immortal thread, though it's pretty well answered I feel he he

Does anyone really have the original CD of this? Stop bragging and start ripping. Razz I've only heard the white cover/digipak mix and it ruins the album. I'd love to hear what the original mix was like.

Forgot to second that. No one will lose here since it is no official release anyway (just in case someone wants to moan we were trying to kill the music industry).
