The first album definitely. Completely revolutionary and one of the greatest rock debuts ever.

The last two songs on 1984 are my favorite VH songs right now, though.

Haha! As the kids say "quoted for truth".

I went with Fair Warning for the simple fact that I've played the first album to death. FW is their most consistent album after the first and probably the only one that rivals it in balls. The DLR period whilst not always consistent always had albums with at least a handful of good songs on it, though at times I'm tempted to write off 1984, I only need remember the drum/guitar intro from Hot For Teacher and I can forgive Panama.

What’s your opinion on Diver Down?

Okay, that's an exception.

I need to listen to it properly before I write it off completely.

Also, I fucking love this Japanese guy playing Van Halen covers inside his Sushi joint:

He was the consummate "front man"

Doesn't fly anymore...but in the 80's? Yep, it was that important to have that type of guy out front, selling it.

The Van Halen albums featuring David Lee Roth are obviously the most important, but I actually enjoy 5150 quite a bit. The first Montrose album wasn’t bad either.

For a long time I would have said the debut. Nowadays I'd say Fair Warning is my favorite.

Voted for 1, but really, I love 1 and 2 equally. With 1984 close behind. And NONE of the (original) Roth era albums suck.

Cheers to the one guy that voted Diver Down. That album gets no love, even from the band. Hang 'em High, Secrets, and Little Guitars are such great songs among amittedly so-so covers all recorded in a rush. So hard to choose a favorite. I've played all of these (minus A Different Kind of Truth) to death for three decades and never ever ever get tired of them. I still feel the fucking rock the exact same way I did the very first time I heard Running With the Devil, Mean Street, or Loss of Control. Had to vote Women and Children First, though. I think it's a perfect balance of elements that each previous and successive Dave album championed. It's got the fire of the debut and II, some ass kicking vibe of Fair Warning, a reasonable dose of the Eddie's later synth obsession...it's got it all. Fuck school, chasing skirt, pounding whiskey, and partying on a Friday night after working your ass off for nothing all week.

Sammy had plenty of good SONGS with Van Halen, but they didn't make any great albums anymore.

For the best work of Sammy, see the first Montrose album!

Love listening to the DLR isolated vocal tracks at least once a year, so good. I can't imagine just how much coke he was blasting.
